A very nice article, great job. I can relate in several different ways.

I live in the Great Northwest and am a fan of not only the Spurs but the Boston Red Sox and the Oakland Raiders as well. I have been a fan of these teams longer than all of this technology has been around, but I must say it is very nice to have access to a site like this one where I can share my thoughts on the team I love with other fans. I also have the NBA league pass so I get to watch all of the games I would otherwise miss.

As for team loyalty, it is no longer a matter of choice. Silver and Black is running through my blood and I am living in Red Sox Nation. In fact I even tried to disown the Red Sox after years of frustration. I just wanted to become a Mariners fan like everyone else around here, but I just couldn't do it I couldn't abandon the team I had followed for so many years. Thankfully it all paid off and they spanked the Yankees and won the World Series. Hopefully it will never happen but if some day the Spurs really stink, I can assure you I will be right there watching all the losses. Rooting just as hard and complaining a lot more.

As for player loyalty the story is a little different. I guess if a player leaves on decent (not perfect) terms and him leaving doesn't have a major negative effect on my team I will still like the player. Roger Clemens went from my favorite player to my least favorite player as a Yankee. Yet I still root for former Spurs Antonio Daniels, Derek Anderson, Speedy Claxton and of course Mr. Kevin Willis.

As far as the Jimmy J thing goes I have to side with tphuey on this one. Having to move around the country is a part of being a professional athlete, and they are pair accordingly, and then some. I have always hated the Jazz, they are without a doubt my least favorite team in the league. But if I got the opportunity to play in the NBA I would sit at the end of the Jazz Bench in a heartbeat. I can't stand it when these athletes like Steve Fancis and Eli Manning refuse to play for a team. If you don't like it go be an accountant or something.

If you don't like you job, quit. If you are warped enough to quit a job that most people dream of, which pays you millions and millions of dollars, more power to you. JJ's actions are his own, and open up an opportunity for a different player who would appreciate it.

As an NBA fan and basketball fan, I say "don't let the door hit you on the way our, JJ."

I follow the Spurs but appreciate many other teams. I follow the Pistons (probably because they are so similar to the Spurs. I never thought I'd say it, but the Jazz are one of my favorite teams. AK47 is one of my favorite players in the NBA. Anyone that enjoys basketball has to like watching the Suns play. I don't see how a basketball fan could not be intriegued by the YAO/TMAC combo in Houston. There is a lot that I love about the NBA, and it doesn't start and end with the Spurs.

"Manu is like a pitbull on a chain, The second Pop releases him, he will rip the other team to pieces..."

It's ok, Misti. We understand. There's no need to justify your irrational and unhealthy love of Horry and cookies. Just go ahead and tell us that they filed that dual restraining order against you. We're all family here, there's no secrets.

**edit** No offense, really. I take the Allen Iverson approach with my jokes: I may lead the league (forum, whatever) in scoring, but I also lead it in shots attempted (just look at my post count). This was, apparently, one of those misses. I may have to adopt a favorite WNBA player so you guys/girls can return the favor and heckle me for it.
+++++++++++++++++++++++
I couldn't agree more Drew. If the point is important enough to JJ to do what's he's doing than more power to him.
I might find the joke funny if I understood it... Where did cookies come in? Are others lost, too, or is it just past my bedtime?

George Gervin should have been allowed the dignity to retire as a Spur. I wish we had kept Kevin Willis. You always support the team first but at time its hard to support that decision.

I don't think Kevin Willis leaving was the Spurs' decision. Peter Holt told me he wanted Willis back but then he signed with Atlanta.

Sports teams are regional. That's one of the reasons a franchise is awarded to a certain area of the country - because there will be (financial) support for the team from that area of the country. In the case of the Spurs the internet may benefit the team more than other large market teams since fans can keep up with them. Personally I like other teams such as Indiana and i've liked watching Phoenix grow in the last few years. I also followed the Rockets when I lived in Houston many years. But my loyalty has always gone to the Spurs even when the Spurs came to The Summit.

This is a real interesting article, Misti! But maybe you're being a bit too diplomatic. It's fun to boo the opposition. That doesn't mean you have to throw beer at them or start a riot. But it's part of the intensity of game time.

On a couple of other things you brought up:
- JJackson has every right to speak out but he did sign on the dotted line. That's everything in business.

- I would disagree that Miami is a hated team. That's pretty far from it. I perceive them as a good competitive team.

- The Star system in the NBA only reflects the star system in so many other types of entertainment (Donald Trump, reality tv stars, etc.)

Good stuff!

Thanks!
It is fun to boo the opposition, especially when the opposition is the Kings. The difficulty I face following the Spurs is that your opposition is the Lakers, my Lakers that I love!

My comment about Miami is soley a So Cal perspective. I understand the rest of the country probably likes them but in So Cal, except for the Shaq-extremists, they are a hated team.

Postby SAmikeyp on Sun Jan 02, 2005 6:36 pm

It is fun to boo the opposition. However some fans feel that since they bought a ticket they can say anything they want and that is not the case. Because you buy a ticket does not give you the right to get personal or racial or yell profanity with kids around. One thing you said Misti I still believe in...The name on the front of the jersey is more important than the one on the back. To me, that is still true. If you are wearing the jersey of the team I support, I root for you, regardless of who you are. If you do not, I root against you, regardless of who you are. If a Spur leaves to another team, I do not wish them harm or ill will but if they are playing the Spurs, San Antonio winning is still the most important. I still believe that a true fan does not desert their team, win or lose.
We few, we band of brothers.
