The city of Philadelphia rose into the San Antonio spotlight on Thursday; not for its basketball team, but for its sandwiches. At the grand opening of Spurs forward Malik Rose’s new restaurant, dubbed “Malik’s Philly’s Phamous,” customers swarmed the shop to test out the classic Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches. Meanwhile, Rose cut the ribbon in front of the restaurant, realizing a dream that began when he joined the Spurs seven years ago.
Serving up his hometown favorites, including Italian water ice and Tastycakes, Malik offers a taste of Philly right in the middle of the Quarry Market. “San Antonio has really been growing on me, and the only times I’ve wanted to get away from it is when I get homesick and want some of the things we serve here, like a water ice or a cheesesteak,” Rose said. “But now that we have [those foods] here, San Antonio is just that much greater.” With a guest list that included Mayor Ed Garza, the recently retired David Robinson and Spurs guard Tony Parker, Rose took time to greet fans and sign autographs at the grand opening.
Several menu items are named in honor of past and current Spurs players, including MVP Tim Duncan. According to Rose, his teammates have been very supportive of his business venture all along.
“I had to ban Timmy from the restaurant earlier because he was supporting one of our competitors, so I put him on cheesesteak punishment,” Rose said. “He just got off punishment, so if he acts right, he can continue to eat here.”
After six years with the Spurs, Rose said he feels at home in San Antonio, and the crowd that crammed into Philly’s Phamous on Thursday reminds Rose that this is where he belongs.
“The turnout was awesome,” Rose said. “Thank God for the city of San Antonio getting behind me the way they did and supporting my new restaurant.”
