Nellie is a good coach. He gets crap for Bradley (as does Cubes) but Bradley sucking is not his fault, they know it's a problem and it's the focus of this offseason. Any coach who gets their team to 60 wins is doing something right.

Yeah, I don't understand you statement. I think Finley and the coaching staff (can't leave out AJ) are the two things that are positive in Dallas.

Najera is a good role player and provides good D. Nash could be a foundation also, if he developed his own defensive skills.

The Mavs shouldn't go after Kidd in a sign and trade, it should be Jermaine O'Neal as a replacement for Nowitzki.

Everyone will probably disagree but I think a starting 5 of

Nash
Finley
Najera
O'Neal
LaFrentz

has a good balance between defense and offense. I think O'Neal's shot blocking ability and post defense will help the Mav centers (Raef and Bradley). Sure Nowititzki is a mutli-faceted talent. But a post player needs to play in the post.

Tim Duncan wastes his talent if he's lofting up threes in a game, seven footers need to make their money in the paint. An outside J is good, but only because it opens up the middle.

Nellie gets alot of flash and pizzazz, but he lacks the pop discipline, or the dscipline that he instills in others to succeed....

Nellie is a fan coach, Fans could ask why doesn't Raef,Dirk, and Bradly play at the same time, they are tall enough, and so he uses these concepts until guys like Malik pack the crap out of Bradly...

Another Reason I don't put much stock in the guy is he and the Dallas org. is alot of flash and pizzazz, maybe cause I'm a spurs fan who sees from a hard arduous work approach to the game, it seems like somehow dallas is too pretentious or synthetic. Nash and Nowetski are unbelievable players, and Finley is very underated. But the Cuban Ideal here is "Me me me, look at me, I'm Dallas, Pay attention to me, I'm great, I'm fun, I'm always the under dog, I'm what every fan wants" so to me the whole Mav team is really a Gimmick.....sorry mavs fans, no disrespect but thats how I feel

Postby jomama007 on Wed Jun 25, 2003 4:16 am

I think Nellie is a great coach...
He's one of the most creative and intelligent coaches out there
he's like a mad basketball scientist

he does the best he can with the given roster
Lafrentz doesn't play up to his potential
and Bradley...well...he's Bradley
without strong front court
his abilities will only take them so far

I think they need to keep Nowitzki
O'neal is tougher in the post and plays D, but they can't sacrifice Nowitzki, he's just too damn good offensively and it'll hurt dallas too much on scoring

they should keep the Big 4 at all cost and try to keep
najera and raja as well...
they need to get rid of bradley and lafrentz and maybe couple other guys there and get a decent big guy
they'll be really really good...

I think LaFrentz is a capable center, but he can't defend the paint alone. I think his game would improve if the Mavs had a better defensive power forward.

I think Nellie has tried everything he can with guys like LaFrentz and Bradley to motivate them. With Bradley, he quipped 'I've run out of matches' when the subject of motivating Bradley came up and he called out LaFrentz in the media after a late December home loss to Milwaukee.

Hard to argue with that sentiment. And in many people's eyes, they'll remain a 'gimmick' team until either they establish an inside defensive presence, or they win a title.
rumors today in two Chicago papers. Bulls offered to trade Fizer, Marshall and 7th pick, for Finley. It's conditional on the player Dallas wants in the draft, being available.

Lets hope it does not happen...

Why don't we want that to happen?

With the 7th pick they are probably going to get a project big man that will take a few years to contribute.

I liked Fizer at Iowa State, but he's a role-player on your average NBA team and bench fodder for the Mavs.

Marshall is OK when he's not injured, but he's just another scoring option and not the gritty defender that they need.

They lose Finley for that? Not necessarily a lop-sided trade, but certainly nothing to worry a Jazz or Spurs fan.

There is no call for you to call out Sisyphos. You've just exposed yourself as someone who needs to mind his manners.

And Dirk is no Magic.

I think it is fruitless to try and compare the two. Magic is in another league of ballplayers.

Dirk is a traditional jump shooter with little post presence. Finley is a straight out monster baller.

Uh, yeah, that was the point of my post. Congrats on successfully reading it. Thanks for the speeling leason also, I am ashamed I only speeled Nowitzki correctly one out of two times.
Tim is a two time MVP, and could add the three pointer to his game if he wanted. But Tim is smart enough to know where he is needed. How many offensive rebounds do you get sitting outside the arc?

Dirk's two point FG% was 49.3%. His three point shooting reduced his total FG % by 3%.

Johnson is 6'9", that's three inches short of seven feet. Are you saying Johnson would have still played point if he were three inches taller?

Plus, Nowitzki attempted 390 three pointers this year, as a forward. The most Magic ever attempted in a season was 276.
