Kidd will be a Spur next season. Book it.

We have a half court team built around a distributing big man, with the occasional fast break.

We have a young point guard familiar with the system who performs very well and is getting better.

Jason Kidd was shown in the Finals to be relatively useless in a half court game.

So, why do we need Jason Kidd? Our style of play is the exact opposite to what he's good at.
I would go w/ J. o'neal over J. kidd
but neither are my first choice...

elton brand was and is my first choice, but he probably won't leave clippers

if we can't get a guy like brand who is a good teammate, hard worker, no nonsense, double double guy
and a championship material

i would rather go with size and fit over pure talent.
as pf and as pg, o'neal and kidd are the best free agenst, but spurs have the best pf in the league already

if we can't get brand we're better off getting a more natural center even if he may not be as talented as o'neal

I would rather get Miller, who's got a mean streak that spurs could use but without jermaine'e ego
he's not as athletic, but shoots well and plays some feisty defense against bigger guys
(did everyone forget the shaq incident? he gets under shaq's skin as well as anybody out there)

i'm also for signing pollard from kings
in maybe a cash trade deal. it's not commonly popular idea
i think he's a tough post presense and board crasher who's been underrated at kings because he's not suited for their style

i still don't want kidd
i think miller or pollard, possibly even pj brown (pf, but he's post player and he's 6-11) would demand much less money and leave cash for some flexibility

elton brand and kobe bryant will be unrestricted free agents in 2004!!!!

<sigh> Elton Brand is damaged goods. He just recently suffered a MAJOR SEASON-ENDING KNEE INJURY that required surgery. Why do the Brand-jockers always ignore that major fact? Just look at Antonio McDyess. He still can barely bend his knee halfway after surgery and all this time. You don't WASTE all your extra resources taking a chance on someone with a bad knee.
--

How tall does a Center have to be? Zo is on;y 6'10" yet he plays center. O'Neal is 6'11". Does a true center have to be 7'0"? That would be ridiculous. How about Malik, he plays PF and is only about 6'6" (although he is listed at 6'7"). Get real, I would be more than happy to give up one inch to get a much more productive player.
Lazarus you make the greatest point. We need a reliable, defensive-minded center, not a superstar...although a superstar would be a huge plus!

If we could get Brad Miller this summer and add a major free agent next season when someone else might be availbale, that would be awesome. What is the deal with Miller? Has he made any comments?

"..the crownless again shall be king."-LOTR

I am going on record right now and say that the Spurs are not going to hold on to their money for next year. Whether or not we agree with who they should take, I believe they are going to make whatever move they feel is necessary and spend the money this year.

I also will say that I would not be surprised if the Spurs did something very different from what we are thinking.
MY TAKE:

I would choose JKidd over JOneal because -

1) True PG like JKidd makes everyone on his team better.. Not only Duncan will have less weight on his shoulders, but Jax will get open looks, Bowen will get open looks, and Manu will get open looks...
2) Major problem with Spurs in the 4th qt.. SOLVED!!! How many times in the 4th, Parker/Jax/Manu stand around waiting to see what Tim does only to force a shot with the clock running out???
3) LAKERS - Best C and SG.. So we need the best PG to go with the best PF.. Let the role players duke it out.. my $$$ is on manu and company...
4) JOneal with his first big contract can go CRAZY.. yes, JKidd is 30 but Joneal is 23, 24 and he's never had a contract like this before... I think he's a liability still... With JKidd, we know that we have a chance to win the next 4-5 yrs down the line... Thats dynasty i nthe making!!!
5) Only negative is the amt of money that we won't have to sign manu and tp in the coming yrs... But I'll leave that up to the best management in NBA...
6) JKidd, minus his one time past experience, has the dimeanor and attitude that fits right in with the Spurs organization.. not too sure about JONeal.. We all know, he did use to play for the Blazers

The thing about Kidd...none of the teams that he wants to go to need him. San Antonio? Well, they sure did just win a championship without him, and have a 21-year-old point guard already entering the elite ranks of the NBA. The Mavs have two of the top ten point guards in the league. Denver...well...I guess they'll take anyone they can get. Jermaine O'Neal should be the hot commodity, not Kidd.

DaDuncanShow, you make some interesting points. Although, as someone who doesn’t want Kidd on our team, I can look at each prism through a different light.

1) This might be your best argument. But I thought Tim already made everyone on the team better. How perfect are we legally allowed to be?

2) I don’t agree here at all. If the solution to watching Tim force a shot with the clock running out is for our point guard to help with scoring, I want Tony’s shooting percentage rather than Kidd’s.

3) What you wrote sounds good, but it’s fallacious reasoning. Shaq + Kobe = Tim + Kidd? Shaq plus Kobe did not even equal Tim plus Tony this past year.

4) There is no reason to think JO’Neal would go “crazy” with a long-term contract. Why would you think that? Every player has his first large contract, and few of them have gone crazy that I’m aware of. He averaged 20 and 10 last season. Where is the liability?

5) You are correct that a huge disadvantage would be the lack of money to re-sign Tony or Gino. I don’t think that can be overstated. But it’s certainly not the only disadvantage. Not having a center to replace David should also be considered a disadvantage. Having a 37 year old point guard earning $12 mil+ in 2009 might also be considered a disadvantage.

6) Kidd is not minus his past experience. That will be a part of him forever. And it was not just one time. According to the 911 tapes, it had happened before. That was just the worst time, which prompted the 911 call. (Now before I start getting hate mail – I know that people can change and maybe Kidd has now got this under control. But you can’t pretend it didn’t happen. It will always be a part of him.)

That’s a cheap shot at JONeal to cast aspirations on him because of the team he used to play for. He had no choice in the matter and from all accounts, he was delighted to get away from Portland.

Just my perspective!
Re-signing TP will not be a problem because we will have his bird rights and therefore are able to sign him even if we go over the cap. The only concern is whether we would exceed the luxury cap threshold.

That is another good reson to sign O'Neal instead of Kidd because we will not be having to fight over who to keep or get rif of because we have two guys at the same position.
Kidd would be there to help find the open guy.. hmm I think Tim already does that... didn't we have a bunch of open people who didn't hit their open shots during the finals where it got so bad we needed to bring in a guy just to hit the open shot. We need to get a consistant scorer to go with Duncan. O'neal just is an answer that fills the open spot left by Drob leaving better then Kidd.

Does Indiana have a state income tax?

Reggie Miller could hit open shots......for a cheap one-year contract too!
