We here have debated that very topic so many times it is rediculous, but since you asked in a non-confrontational way, one more time shouldn't hurt. I am always willing to enlighten the less fortunate (non-Spur fans). The season was a shortened season, but the playoffs were the same as they are every year. The title is legitimate and the Spurs proved it by sweeping almost everyone, including LA. It wasn't even close. To say it is worth less is simply silly.

How can you say it wasn't a true championship? The playoffs weren't shortened - no team had an advantage over another. The best team won. I don't see why you find that so hard to accept considering the Lakers ahve won three. If you hadn't I could understand the bitterness.

*season

Postby drumwork on Tue Jul 23, 2002 2:15 am

I guess this subject will be an ongoing one and I have to chime in - the way I see it - the "shortened" season was probably the most difficult one to win a championship - it was a more entertaining season with every game having meaning - the 82 game season is to (and understandibly so) make dinero to pay the salaries - and a hope to make it through without injury marathon. So the excuse for not winning the champtionship that year was that there weren't enough games to get it together? Doubt it! How many games do you need? The shortened season was still about positioning - it resembled a "college" season where every game is important - hence more entertainment value. I don't think the Knicks would've had a problem with the ring that year - and I doubt their media would have a problem with it as well.

So was it a legitimate champtionship? YES - so shut up about questioning it. The * is just crap brought up as an excuse for not winning it that year.
I love it how all these LaLa fans want to call it an asterisk. What is even more funny is you know if they had won it you would NEVER hear that about their win.

One can come up with all kinds of reasons to put an asterisk by any championship. Do we put one by the Lakers first one in 2000 because the defending champions went into the playoffs without their star player? I doubt if the Lakers could repeat this year if Shaq or Kobe were to sit out the entire playoffs! The season was shortened not the playoffs. Therefore, the asterisk is a mute point!

One must remember that during the lockout-shortened season, several players complained of the grueling five game a week schedule, besides, as Blondie said, the playoffs were of the same duration. So if one implies that the shortened-season was easier by any means, that´s old-fashioned hogwash.

So nope, I don´t buy into it. The O´Brien Trophy is the same every year and had any other team won it in 99 they´d be arguing the same thing I am.
I can't believe this is still being discussed!!!

The Redskins' first two Super Bowl wins were following strike marred seasons (one with only nine regular season games and the other with replacement players).

The Devils' 1995 Stanley Cup came after a lock-out shortened season.

The Dodgers won the 1981 World Series after a split season that saw first-half and second-half division winners.

Yet the stigma of being the champions of a contractually shortened season appears to be reserved only for the Spurs. Ridiculous!!!!
I have yet to see an asterisk in any record book. Everyone who saw that year knows that the Spurs were by far the best team in the NBA, and the Championship Trophy ended up in the right hands.

Rilyman, you brought up a great argument. During the split season in 1981, the St. Louis Cardinals finished second in both parts of the season, but had the best record in the National League for the entire year and did not get to go to the playoffs. There wasn't any asterisk by the Dodgers.

Yawn.

The playoffs were exactly the same format and the Spurs dominated everyone they faced...including your beloved Lakers. There is no question that the Spurs earned that championship. It is idiotic to suggest otherwise.

There should be at least two asterisks on this year's shampionship, thanks to the refs handing it to the Lakers.

There was no three-peat.
