‘Twas the night before training camp, when all through the city
Spurs fans sat awaiting a team that was gritty
All the fingers were grossed, superstitions carried out
In hopes that this coming season would be nothing less than a rout
Spurs’ brass was standing with a proud look of stead
While visions of post-season success danced in their heads
The coyote in his costume and Pop’s bad rap
Had just struggled through a post season of crap
When out from the Express News there arose such a clatter
R.C. sprang from his desk to see what was the matter
Away to the paper he flew like a flash
Flipped to the sports section and threw the rest in the trash
The reporters for the Spurs made a prediction so obscene
That Buford himself had to take a reprieve
When what to his wondering eyes did glow
But a prediction of a Championship with another in tow
Without a major acquisition, except Brent Barry, the stick
He knew in a moment it must be a trick
More rapid than Artest’s punches, the predictions came quick
They all agreed, no debate, not even from Dick (Stockton)
“Brent Barry, Tony Parker, Ginobili and Bowen
Devin Brown, Malik, even Udrih and Nesterovic!
To the top of the conference! To the top of the league!
A Championship is sealed, the season will be a breeze!"
All role players that, without a star, kinda suck
But when they come together, they bring heaping good luck
So up to the top of the standings they flew
With a lot more wins than even you knew
And then in an instant, I got bad feelings inside
The Spurs had shown weakness and lack of team pride
As I looked at the sports page and was frowning at the ground
The Cavs came to SA with LeBron James a bound
He was glowing with pride from his headband to his shoes
Until he met a Tim Duncan cross-over that made even his teammates boo
An entire Cavs team he had flung on his back
He was an MPV candidate just awaiting the plaque
His eyes, how they twinkled, his interviews killed
His game was inarguable, his moves so skilled
His contract was fat like the Barkley of old
Yet he somehow stayed grounded just like he’d been told
But the Spurs were built solidly and ready to play
To avenge a Rockets loss, it was either never or today
Their bench was ready and their shooting perfected
They were more agressive than Malone when he got rejected
They were ready to play, with their pride at stake
And I laughed at the TV and gave Silas a finger shake
A wink from Duncan’s eye told us all we needed to know
That shooting was a lost art about ready for a show.
He spoke not a word but went straight to his work
He hit every shot without so much as an irk
And after flushing one home that made Vince Carter proud
Gave a nod to Greg Pop and a wave to the crowd
He went back to the bench and the Spurs took the cue
They pulled away from the Cavs like they had contracted the flu
And I heard Pop explain as they walked to the locker room with delight
“We came here to prove the predictions were right!”

+++++++++++++++++++++++
