I think it would be nice to include this with the other two articles we will be sending him....

I have two.

Game-wise my favorite Malik play was his dunk on Mutombo. I still have the 8x10 of it he autographed for me!

Personally it was getting invited to his Philly's Phamous Grand Opening and being able to take several of our staff along. We not only got to visit with Malik, but met many other Spurs, new and old.

Malik took time to talk to me and gave me a hug even though he was very busy. It was a great night and he was all smiles - makes for a very good memory!

I will post pics later, and please post yours if you have any with him!

Edited by: Blondie4Spurs at: 2/27/05 11:55 am

game-wise- it was the first time I saw him play, which I referenced to in my article

Quote:
I attended my first Spurs game at age nine. It was against the Hornets, of the Charlotte variety. I didn’t know the players’ names; I didn’t know their positions. All I knew was entertainment, and that I was supposed to cheer for the player who brought the largest benefit to the home team. It was there that I encountered my first dilemma: Malik Rose. It was during his first season as a Spur and second in the league. He was raw, inexperienced, clumsy, but determined as hell. I remember watching him power his way from under the basket, up and seemingly through the bodies of at minimum two defenders. I remember how he would accidentally bank it high off the backboard, then quickly snatch the offensive rebound and reload. Rinse and repeat several times. I remember how he would finally slam it home, and release so much emotion that the people high in the top section of the Alamodome couldn’t help but make the same, constipated expression which so naturally adorned Malik’s own face. He would run down to the other end, as excited as ever that he could contribute. Then promptly foul his defensive assignment.

personally- My sister used to be good friends with Malik's girlfriend at the time. She was up at our lakehouse one weekend when she got a message from Malik on her phone. She had apparently yelled at him for something, so he was doing his best to appologize. Listening to the voice mail was pathetic, at best. Hearing someone like Malik beg for a female (who, honestly, wasn't all that attractive or intelligent) back brought a big grin to my face.

Then we went over to another part of the lake with the GF on the waverunners where we saw Samaki Walker. You haven't seen awkward until you've seen a 7 foot basketball player on a tiny waverunner.

That weekend seems surreal to this day.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Malik Rose: '97-'05 -Once a Spur, always a San Antonian. You will be missed

My two favourites are his dunk on Mt Mutombo and his block of Shawn "The Mantis" Bradley during the WCF, coincidently both came in the championship season.
--
His game in NJ. Not just the dunk. He had a great game and that put us in position to win it all at home on Fathers day.

My 2nd favorite memory was yesterday. He showed his usual heart , hustle, pride and professionalism by going out and getting 8 boards in 1 quarter in a system he hasn't even practiced in yet. Keep on keeping on Malik.

Out of Game situation I keep going back to his speech to D.Rob when the Spurs were honoring David. Well Malik you too are Special.

His dunk over Deke in the Finals in '03, and his play during the entire WCF Finals 2003 against Dallas. He had a some monster games in that series and was a big reason why we beat the Mavs.

It's not really on court but almost: all the great atmosphere he brought to the bench. He was always cheering or making jokes, and it seemed like the rest of the guys really enjoyed that. He would always be the first one to stand up and celebrate a dunk or a flashy play.

One of mine that hasn't been mentioned was a game against the Kings a couple of years ago. He was hounding CWebb, out working him in the post, locking him up. CWebb was crying to the refs and finally got frustrated with the way Malik was guarding him on an inbounds play. He barked at the refs and the game paused, Malik showed the ref that what he was doing was legal, and held his stance. CWebb was Malik's b**** that day.

Also Malik had a sting of awesome games against the Jazz, who were still a dominant team at the time. Malik was tearing them up (as he'd been doing frequently) and the commentators mentioned that Sloan preps his players to go against Malik the same way he preped them to go against Duncan.

Personally- At Malik's Philly Phamous Grand Opening when I got to meet him. He was one of the first Spur that I've been lucky to meet and he seemed to talk to you like you were a personal friend.

Basketball-Dunk on Mutumbo

others- Malik cam. I remember after we won the championship, Malik showed some of his videos that he caught during the playoffs that were pretty funny (there was one where Manu was on the phone and he told Manu to get off the phone and get a haircut and Manu looked a little annoyed ) on WOAI. I also liked how he seemed to cheer on the team no matter what was going on.

My memory of Malik would have to be the 00' playoffs, Malik was the only guy who could defend Shaq and my god the things he did to piss Shaq off was great. On one play he dunked it on Madsen and I saw Jack Nicholson raise his hands in the air it was so good. -and thats rare.

I have to say the same as Blondie's on both moments. But would have to add he also took the time to take some pictures with us.
This was all possible in big thanks to Blondie for inviting us and a lot of hard work.

P.S: Except for the hug part, it was just a hand shake.
