Downtown Austin Restaraunt Recommendations

Downtown Austin Restaraunt Recommendations

Postby Blondie on Sat Feb 06, 2010 10:59 am

I know we have several Austin natives who visit here, and was wondering if you could tell me what the best places to eat in downtown Austin are. We'll be there Feb.19-21 for the Kenny Wayne Shephard concert at Antone's and are staying at the Hilton on 4th. I'm looking for something within walking distance or not too far by cab, and also unique to Austin (no chains). We like all kinds of food, no picky eaters here :)

I'm a vegetarian; I only eat in places that don't serve meat. Here is a list of the restaurants (with links) I go to that are reasonably close to the Hilton, though none are in a short walking distance.

borboleta
Raw foods--small place, pricey, gourmet

veggie heaven
Oriental food, cheap, menu has photos of the dishes; I eat here a lot.

mothers cafe
mostly TexMex, nice atmosphere, good food

casa de luz
macrobiotic -- all you can eat, just south of the river

Thanks for the info. We will have our car but were hoping to not drive much.

Here's some of my faves downtown:

- Stubb's BBQ on 801 Red River Street
- Clay Pit (Indian cuisine) on 1601 Guadalupe Street
- Texas Chili Parlor on 1409 Lavaca Street
- Athenian Bar and Grill on 600 Congress Avenue
- Kyoto Sushi on 315 Congress Avenue (TIP: Get in line at least 30 min prior to 6:00pm for happy hour prices on sushi)
The game ain't over yet...

Thanks Stofe - we were planning to check out Stubbs, so I'm glad to hear it is actually good and not just a tourist trap.

We ate at Sabas for my b-day this past year. It was really good, but pricey. I cannot remember what street its on but if you go try a Sabacolada lol :mhihi: I have pics on my FB page from there (Rudy Martinez III)
