Watching MTV's Date my Mom was like watching a trainwreck. Except instead of real carnage and awsomeness, the fire was replaced by construction paper cut-outs, and the trains were cardboard boxes propelled by kindergardeners standing inside.

The basic premis of the show was for a guy to "date" the moms of three ladies (varying in weight and attractiveness), then pick which daughter, who he had not previously met, that he wants to date based off their mothers. Except it was scripted. The mothers appeared as if they were reading off telepromters, and the daughters did not have the intelligence to come up with the cliche one-liners on their own.

It was conversational botox.

Of course, the reason I watched this 30-minute spot is because I had previously tuned in to catch MTV's Stuck in the 70s, a reality (and I use this term loosely) show of the same mold as Real World. I had heard a lively discussion about the show between a 23 year old co-worker, and a 13 year old kid. Afterwhich they asked me to do the Hustle, leaving me dumbfounded and utterly in the dark. So I had some homework to do, mainly out of morbid curiosity.

In Stuck in the 70s, the contestants were told it was a Real World-esque show they were singing up for, but were pleasantly surprised when they were informed MTV would be force-feeding them 70s lifestyle for the remainder of their 15 minutes of fame. All cell phones, CDs, iPods, clothing, and anything modern were removed from the cast members. In came the 70s wardrobe, hairstyles, and even speech lessons ("groovy" is a mandatory part of their vocabulary). And when the buzzer sounds, everyone must stop what they are doing and literally, physically, Do the Hustle.

Well, at least I'm not in the dark anymore.
