Bowen for Harrington??

Postby Zan the Fan on Thu Jul 13, 2006 1:25 pm

Considering Bowen's style of play, I don't think he will experience considerable drop-off with age. You lose ability to drive the lane and take people off the dribble with age, but being able to stay in front of someone takes a little longer to lose...so I'm not sure his age is the biggest concern. I just think his trade value peaked about a season ago and it isn't going to get any higher considering the way the games are being called now, so it might be wise to deal him now while a guy like Harrington is available. I like Harrington's chances guarding Nowitzki as much as I like Bowen's ability to guard Kobe. But given the landscape of the NBA, I'm more worried about Dirk (not to mention the guys in Phoenix) being in a position to take out the Spurs than Kobe.
Why do you think that? I've seen plenty of players in their mid 30s lose their ability to stay in front of someone.

Bowen for Harrington??

My point is fairly simple. 10 years from now, I don't think Tony Parker will be able to do the same things that he does now. Odds are he just won't have the same speed and quickness at his disposal. Can the same be said for Bruce Bowen? I don't think so. Why does that matter? Because it isn't exceptional speed or strength that makes Bowen such a defensive force. It is his discipline and his knowledge of not only his opponent, but also the Spurs' various defensive principles. I think this is the reason why Bowen is still a tradable commodity.....but I also think that a GM would have to look long and hard at acquiring Bowen because of the NBA's new emphasis on punishing teams who play physical defense.....

Basically Bowen seems to be caught in the right place at the wrong time. He is still an NBA caliber player, but perhaps not a circa 2006 NBA caliber player....his style may be lost in the pre-Suns/Mavs/Wade wave of the future.
