Bruce Bowen is back with the Spurs — at least for one day

The NBA lockout has created a communications roadblock between teams and their current players.

Threats of million-dollar fines from the league offices have kept players and teams apart and will continue to — at least for the forseeable future.

But as pointed out by Brad Lehman, the Texas sports editor for the Houston Chronicle/San Antonio Express-News, it still seems a little ironic that Bruce Bowen is back with the Spurs.

Bowen returned to the University of the Incarnate Word to participate in the Spurs’ summer basketball camps.

His up-from-the-bootstraps story of playing four seasons outside the NBA before starting his career there would be inspirational for anybody.

Bowen retired after the 2009 season. The Spurs really never have replaced his defensive mentality since he left.

And I bet if you got Gregg Popovich alone — especially after drinking a glass or two of his preferred pinot noir as he watched game tape of the Spurs’ playoff series against Memphis — he would tell you he wishes that Bowen was still playing.

It's got to be disappointing for the kids at Spurs camp that they can't meet many of the players with the lockout. At least Bruce came and talked to them.
