LONG BEACH - The Lakers lost their Summer Pro League opener, 89-87, to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon at the Pyramid.

The Lakers' top draft pick, Jordan Farmar from UCLA, made a successful debut and second-round draft pick J.R. Pinnock impressed in scoring 16 points, hitting 6 of 9 shots from the field.

Farmar finished with a team-high 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting in 30 minutes. He earned praise from coach Kurt Rambis for playing within the triangle offense.

"He seemed like he came in and had been studying it or something because he knows what he's doing," Rambis said.

Farmar said: "To me, it's pretty much basic principles. One thing triggers a series of events, and I just get it."

Andrew Bynum had 12 points and five rebounds but played only 20 minutes because of foul trouble.
Day 1 of the 37th SPL was like walking down basketball memory lane.

John Williams, Ozell Jones, Keith Closs and Rick Anderson were some of the most noticeable names listed on the Hoosier Daddy staff and roster.

In the 1980s, Williams was one of the mostly touted forwards in the country. He was compared to Magic Johnson because of his size and his abilities to rebound and race end to end for layups and set his teammates up for assists.

He played at LSU, in the NBA and in Spain.

These days, he is working in real estate and coaching Hoosier Daddy.

"I am trying to get an assistant coaching job somewhere or be a scout," he said. "I just want to get involved with one of the NBA teams. Basketball is what I've been doing all my life. I still have a love for the game.

"This is an opportunity for me to show everybody that I have the ability to make the transition from being old school to coaching the younger generation."

In the late 1970s, Jones, who is also serving as a coach, was on one of Poly High's best teams. He later played at Wichita State and with the San Antonio Spurs.

Closs, 30, last played for the Clippers in 2000. The 7-footer has played with the Harlem Globetrotters and overseas.

"My window of opportunity (to play in the NBA) is getting smaller," he said. "I just need somebody to work with me."

Anderson played at Poly and then at Arizona.
