Former Spur Hill excited for trip to Brownsville

Professional basketball player George Hill will host two youth clinics and make appearances in three Rio Grande Valley cities this week, including a visit to the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College on Wednesday.

Hill, who played three years for the San Antonio Spurs but was traded to the Indiana Pacers in June, will visit Port Isabel on Monday Brownsville on Tuesday and McAllen on Wednesday. He may be accompanied by other professional athletes and will be ending his six-city tour through South Texas.

Proceeds from his clinics will go his George Hill Rising Stars Youth Basketball Foundation.

Hill, who visited UTB-TSC in 2010, is looking forward to visiting the Valley again.

"This is something I want to continue to do," Hill said. "I want to thank everybody for all the support they have given me. We had a good turnout in Brownsville and it would be great to see people in the Valley again."

Hill visited Laredo Friday and has a visit planned to Corpus Christi Sunday before coming to the Rio Grande Valley.

Hill will visit UTB-TSC on Wednesday, July 20, for a Signature Basketball Clinic for youth, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. at the REK Center. A benefit softball game against Brownsville law enforcement is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Scorpion Field.

Tickets for the game are $5 per person, to benefit Scorpion Athletic scholarships. Tickets may be obtained by calling Scorpion Athletics at 882-2255 or 551-1214.

The rest of his Valley schedule includes a trip from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Port Isabel for a Signature Basketball Clinic for youth, then a stop from 2 p.m. to 4p.m. at Laguna Madre Boys’ and Girls’ Club Community BBQ. Finally, he will make an appearance at Doubleday’s Grill and Bar later in the day.

At 9 p.m. Thursday in McAllen, the George Hill Final Farewell Benefit Party will take place at Club Ibiza, 101 S. 17th St. Special live performances. Presale tickets $20 can be purchased by calling 956-400-9870. Ticket prices at door $50 women, $75 men. Must be 18 years to enter.
