George Gervin talks to his students about why They should "aim high."
SAN ANTONIO, TX (Sept. 22, 2006) -- George “Iceman” Gervin recently visited with students from the George Gervin Academy and shared his favorite classics with 200 high school students, grades ninth through twelfth, in an effort to encourage literacy. The George Gervin Academy also received $3,500 in Penguin Classic books to assist in furthering the students’ education.
Throughout 2006, Penguin Classics and the NBA have teamed up to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Penguin Classics and the NBA Cares “Read to Achieve” Literacy Initiative with a new campaign: Aim High. Live Classic.
This unique match presents a perfect connection to new audiences for both the NBA and Penguin Classics. NBA Cares, with support from Penguin Classics, embraces this initiative with great devotion and personal commitment on the part of the many athletes with something valuable to share about striving, meeting challenges, overcoming obstacles, and living one’s life well: all time-honored literary themes.
The George Gervin Academy provides education, vocational training, mentoring, tutoring, job placement, and supportive services for over 1400 at-risk and disadvantaged youth and their families. Their mission is to provide innovative, comprehensive, culturally sensitive services that will have a positive impact on the lives of troubled youth and families.
