Now the media is catching on

Funny how I was spouting how stupid the media was about us losing Rasho & Nazar.

How their production versus what we are getting is about the same and so forth.

2 centers = 5million

How did the Spurs do in the off-season?

Despite trading Rasho Nesterovic for Matt Bonner and losing Nazr Mohammed to the Pistons, some NBA player personnel types believe the Spurs are better equipped at the center position for the Western Conference. After sitting Mohammed and Rasho Nesterovic for all but a few minutes of the seven games of the Mavericks playoff series, Spurs’ coach and executive vice-president of basketball operations Gregg Popovich clearly believed he needed to change his team’s approach in the pivot for a style of play he believes is changing, particularly in the West.

One of the Spurs’ primary Western rivals agrees.

“(Francisco) Elson will help them a little,” D’Antoni said. “They are quicker and younger. They match up better for the West now.”

Under contract for $6 million over two seasons, Elson is also a much more fiscally efficient player than either Mohammed, who signed with the Detroit Pistons for $30 million over five years, or Rasho Nesterovic, who had three years left, at $23.5 million, when the Spurs traded him to the Toronto Raptors for Bonner and Williams.

"Tim (Duncan) is going to play some minutes at five (center)," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. "The economic balance of our roster didn't warrant spending an exorbitant amount of money at the five position. But it is the anchor of our defense, so it's an important role, and we hope Francisco's shot-blocking numbers grow, just as other people's have grown when they've come into our system."

Elson spent the past two months in San Antonio, working out daily and playing a lot of pickup ball. He likes the business-like approach of his new teammates.

"I've been here two months now, playing pick-up games and talking to Tim, everyone. It's a laid-back bunch, but very professional in the approach.

"The coaching staff has been great, too, explaining to me how they play their defense. I played against them in the (2005) playoffs and they kicked our butts, so I know already their style of play. They force you to the baseline and the help side is always going to be there. I hope I can adapt to it quickly."
