Former Spurs coach Mike Brungardt picked up a couple of impressive honors as he retired from the team earlier this summer after 17 seasons with the team.

The NBA named Brungardt as the league’s Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year in May. Brungardt also became only the second NBA-associated strength coach to be inducted into the USA Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame.

The Garden City (Kan.) Telegram has an interesting profile about Brungardt, one of the most underrated reasons why the Spurs claimed four championships in nine seasons from 1999-2007.

Brungardt’s quick sense of humor is showcased in the article with his hometown newspaper where he explains why he won the NBA’s award after last season.

“They felt sorry for me because we went out in the first round this year,” Brungardt quipped.

Once the lockout is settled, Brungardt won’t be around for the Spurs’ franchise anymore. It is likely their biggest loss during the off-season.
