The players' association filed two unfair labor practice charges Friday against the NBA over issues with the new ball and the league's crackdown on player complaints.

The charges were filed with the National Labor Relations Board.

A number of players publicly have complained about changing the ball from leather to a microfiber composite. Although players are adjusting to the new ball, they're having a much harder time with the crackdown on reactions after the whistle, often referred to as a "zero-tolerance policy."
NBA commissioner David Stern enacted the policy, saying players were reacting too strongly after calls, and it has led to an increase in technical fouls called this season.

I think they need to find the fine line between allowing the players to show emotion but not letting them whine. Like when Francisco Elson yelled after that one dunk and then got a T - he shouldn't get a T for that, but I am enjoying not watching the players whine and complain after each call. It does speed up the game as well.

more on the new ball......

In addition to the startling increase in uncorked whine, the NBA's new microfiber composite ball has created some interesting (and early) statistical returns.

We're talking basketball ...

For example, the threat of reduced scoring has yet to materialize, with eight teams averaging more than 100 points per game. Just five teams averaged in excess of the century mark in the previous campaign.

Four NBA teams are bagging at least 48 percent of their field-goal tries this season, compared to zero last season.

But the promised rise in turnovers seems to be taking hold. Through nearly one-fourth of this season, 11 teams are plus-1.4 or better in the crucial assist-turnover ratio. Twenty-two teams were beyond that level of efficiency with the ball last season.

NBA watchdogs also believe long rebounds have diminished, thanks to the synthetic ball's knack for sticking closer to the rim.

Now the players are whining about not being able to whine enough. Pathetic.
