Artest to opt out? Could he end up in SA?

from HoopsWorld's Rumor Has It

Opting Out? Multiple sources tell HOOPSWORLD that Ron Artest is seriously considering opting out of the final year of his contract. Artest can stick with the Sacramento Kings for one final year at $7.4 million or choose to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Should Artest choose to opt out, he would likely look for a full Mid Level Exception (MLE) deal with a championship contender such as the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs or even the New Orleans Hornets.

The current MLE starts at $5.356 million. While it may climb slightly, Artest is said to be open to the idea of a five-year, $31 million contract. One source says Artest believes he's worth far more than that, but is coming to grips with the NBA's tightening economic climate.

Artest is

Duncan studied psychology. Maybe he could do a Dr. Phil on him. Interesting.

The most recent that I can remember was Stephen Jackson. Spurs had him under control.

edit: I remembered another one, Dennis Rodman.

Artest would have to be crazy to opt out. So he probably will. If he does I sure hope the Spurs aren't dumb enough to get him. No head cases here please.

Sign him. Period. Ron has been a good citizen for a while now. Anyone who thinks he's a head case should also believe that the Spurs are boring since it's based on reputation.

The Spurs need a powerhouse defender. A bruiser in the post. Artest respects the Spurs organization. The Spurs could benefit much more from an experienced loose cannon than some underdeveloped Euro-player.

Get Artest now!!!!

One whole season without an incident makes him a good citizen now?

He's had several since he's been with the Kings. What's nuts about that? I don't buy into the Spurs don't need headcases idea. The Spurs could use an edge, actually. They have none right now. If you think the Spurs haven't had to deal with head cases or problem players there's a rude awakening. Rodman, SJax, even Malik Rose arguing with Pop during time-outs. Avery fighting in the locker room. The Spurs aren't so historically fragile that they couldn't handle this. It's their strength. Artest fits into THIS system. Not the other way around. So if he's willing to come here (and honestly that's an IF) why not give him a shot?

He's EXACTLY what the Spurs need. A tough, solid defender with the type of physical play that the Spurs SHOULD be about right now. They were easily handled by, get this - Sasha Vujacicicic! Rony Turiaf! That's embarrasing. The fact is they're not very physically tough right now. Can you imagine Artest on Kobe, Odom, David West, Pierce or Ray Allen? Shoot even KG or Dirk Diggler! Can you imagine him frustrating a short fuse like Andrew Bynum?

If he's willing to come for the MLE it's worth taking a chance.

i agree with gameFACE.. he deserves a chance, and the spurs can give it to him. he's proved he can stay out of trouble with the Kings, if he's willing to go for the MLE and help the spurs win a championship, what the heck. let's give it a shot. some people won't be happy with it, but as soon as he starts producing for the spurs they'll come around. same thing with TO and the cowboys. certain fans didn't want that headcase on their team either, but two years later they can't get enough of him and his popcorn. i say if he's willing, the spurs could really use a player like artest.

What Timmy wants, Timmy gets. After the lose against the Lakers, Tim said that the Spurs needed to add a few pieces. I am thinking that Tim has a say on what players he would like for the team. So i wonder what he thinks about Artest and whether he respects him as a teammate, since Artest's talent is not disputed.

If the Spurs feel that Artest would not cause havoc in the locker room, I wouldn't be surprised if they try to lure him.
