Maggette to Warriors :(

Maggette to Warriors :(

The San Antonio Spurs have targeted Corey Maggette and are the front-runners to sign the Los Angeles Clippers’ free agent forward, multiple league sources said Tuesday night.

While no deal was imminent, Maggette would be expected to sign a multi-year deal for the mid-level exception, a move that would fulfill the Spurs’ desperate need for perimeter athleticism and scoring. Maggette would be leaving the Clippers, just as the team came to an agreement with Golden State free agent Baron Davis on a contract. With so much sudden salary cap space, the Warriors could be a threat to swoop in and take Maggette for themselves. The Boston Celtics have also shown serious interest in Maggette.

Another team with salary cap room, the Philadelphia 76ers, will present Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent Josh Smith an offer sheet on Wednesday when he visits with Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski in Philadelphia, two league sources said.

The Spurs struggled to generate points in the Western Conference finals against the Los Angeles Lakers and believe Maggette could make a dramatic impact as a complement to Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. Maggette averaged 22.1 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Clippers, who expect now to quickly re-sign free agent Elton Brand.

The Spurs had targeted Maggette as an explosive offensive addition to an offense that struggled to generate points in the Western Conference finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. Maggette averaged 22.1 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Clippers, who expect now to quickly re-sign free agent Elton Brand.

Maggette, 28, opted out of his contract with the Clippers on Monday, along with Brand. He had hopes of returning to the Orlando Magic, but the Spurs, who have an interest in Denver restricted free agent J.R. Smith and Detroit free agent Jarvis Hayes, made an aggressive push in the last 24 hours to sell Maggette on playing an important part in restoring them to a championship team.

“He’s going to take a lot of the offensive load off (Manu) Ginobili, but (Spurs coach Gregg) Popovich will have to hide him defensively on the floor,” a Western Conference scout said Tuesday night.

Maggette can sign on July 9, once the NBA’s moratorium on free agents is lifted.

This just made my day, I would easily take him over JR Smith because he can rebound better, not as crazy, and can play better defense, plus when we go small he can be used as a SF/PF

Please make this happen Spurs FO

plus he gets to the FT line about 8 times a game, which really helps during the 4th quarter, if we have trouble scoring the basketball

and if Barry comes back, and the Spurs can use the LLE on a player like Matt Barnes, we will have a versitle team next season, plus the Spurs might move bonner somewhere in a sign and trade but look at the tream right now

PG: Parker, Hill, Vaughn
SG: Maggette, Manu, Barry
SF: Bowen, Udoka, Sanikidze/Gist, Hairton,/or Barnes
PF: Duncan, Mahinmi, Bonner or sign in trade player involving Bonner
C: Oberto, Thomas, maybe Javtokas or another big in FA

all the Spurs have to say is this: " Maggette you will be our starting SG, we need Manu to rest because of the Olympics and his ankle"

that should be the selling point

Maggette would obviously be a great free-agent signing. I am worried about Golden State swooping in and signing Maggette for more than the Spurs can offer. With Baron Davis gone and Arenas looking to resign with Washington I got to think Magette would be on their list of guys to go after. Boston also offered Maggette a contract. I am glad the Spurs are the reported front runner, but i am a little worried we won't be able to sign him.

Won't have to worry about the Warriors if they do this

Warriors Offer Arenas $100 Million Contract

The Warriors offered Gilbert Arenas a maximum-level contract, one that would pay him more than $100 million over five years.

Baron Davis surprisingly opted out of his contract on Monday.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is no other way I can say how badly we NEED, yes NEED him if we want another ring. (of coarse we do).
I mean he doesn't have to do more than score 12 points a game off the bench and he would out preform our bench last season.
I'm counting manu as a starter.
It would be incredible!!!
I was excited when we signed Fin Dawg. I think I would explode if we sign Corey.
Honestly how hard can it be to be talked into play with the Spurs.
I mean your playing with TIM DUNCAN if you play with him your probably going to win a ring. Its not like your not getting paid millions anyway.
If I was a NBA player I would be dying to get on any team that gave me a chance to win a championship.

Hell yeah! THat's be awesome and even before i saw this article I was thinking about the availability of Magette. I've been thinking for a couple seasons now that he'd look great in a Spurs uniform. Man, it would sure help us out ALOT. He's a great physical presance, he's really strong for a gaurd, hence why he get's to the line alot. He can get injury prone sometimes but hey, I'll take my chances! Get it done Spurs!
