IF NOT MAGGETTE, THEN... (other options)

Postby SAS Sizzle on Tue Jul 08, 2008 8:08 pm

I would love to have COREY MAGGETTE here, but if he takes money from Golden State or would rather join another roster then I would settle for any combo of these other FA's:

CARLOS DELFINO: Ginobili-Lite, should be had for around $3 million, or may go to Europe, GET HIM!
======
YAKHOUBA DIAWARA: young athletic wing defender from France, Denver is not going to match an offer for him as they are over the tax threshold, GET HIM!
======
CARL LANDRY: Super tough gritty PF, does the dirty work. Has some re-signing issues with Houston, they sort of spurned him. We should nab him as payback for the Scola deal
======
NENAD KRSTIC: Restricted 7-footer, good mid-range game. Although NJ is not inclined to match an offer that is even half of the MLE. Blew his knee out in a bad way, but the Spurs wanted him badly in the draft until NJ grabbed him a couple of spots higher. If Kurt Thomas flees he could be the guy, worth a look.
======
ROGER MASON, JR: Not sure what the Spurs would do with him if we are gonna give George Hill a serious look. Would be a major upgrade over Jacque Vaughn b/c he can hit tons of 3's, but Vaughn did not opt out of his deal so we are stuck for another year with his hustle and that's about all. We tried to get him last year but he stayed with Washington.
======
KELENNA AZUBUIKE: young, super athletic, tough. He is one of Nellie's guys, they will match I assume
======
MICKAEL PIETRUS: young athletic wing defender, supposedly signing 4-yr deal with Orlando
======
RYAN GOMES: young, smart, tough SF, not very good shooting range, Restricted status, Wolves could match easily
======
JARVIS HAYES: good range but he destroyed his knee a couple of years ago, Detroit prolly will not match an offer. I would rather have...
======
RONALD DUPREE: Tough SF, not great range but OK defender, not much interest around the league for this ex-Piston bench warmer. Never really been given a chance to be in a rotation though. Looks almost exactly like Bruce Bowen down to the bald head, same height and weight as Bruce even.
======
ERSAN ILYASOVA: Restricted status, very young and tough, skilled, reminds me of Linas Kleiza. Every team needs a Kleiza! He may venture off to Europe actually, but he would be a great prospect. We already have Sanikidze in this role though, waiting in the wings.
======
MATT BARNES: Unrestricted status, GS will not match an offer for him. Does not fit the Spurs imo, they could have already had him off the waiver wire for a couple of seasons now. Passionate player though.
======
JAMES JONES: 3-point specialist, spot-up shooter, not reknowned for much else. Take a flyer on him for the minimum?
======
MIKAEL GELABALE: Another athletic young Frenchman, just a few months from being out of the league altogether, nobody seems to want him.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

With those options in mind, if Maggette signs elsewhere I would be thrilled to have Delfino and Diawara split the MLE and bring back one each of Bones/Finley and Horry/Thomas. I like Bones and Horry although my instincts are it will be Fin and Kurt.

I think if the Spurs offered Delfino less than $3 million the Raptors would match the offer. I say go after Barnes, that is who I wanted in the first place.

Ryno I think I read somewhere that Toronto is not going to match for Delfino, not sure where but I think they are letting him walk? Cuz he was talking about going to Europe next season if he does not get an offer.

Why do ya like Barnes? He has a good run from time to time but most of the time he is very turnover-prone...

He is a little turnover prone, but not too bad. I love the energy and enthusiasm that he brings. IMO that is something that the Spurs need desperately from their wings. He has nice size so he can play both the 2 or the 3, and he rebounds the ball well for a wing. I wish he shot the 3 ball a little better that is always a nice trait to have when you are playing with drive and kick players like Tony or Manu and dominate bigs like Timmy D. But his 3 ball seems to be getting better as his career progresses, he may turn into a very good 3 point shooter some day.

I think the most important thing for the Spurs now that Maggette is possibly off the table is that we maintain our cap flexibility for the summer of 2010, there will be tons of great free agents that summer. Like Bosh, Lebron, Joe Johson, Dirk, Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, TMac, Wade and others.

@libri

Azubuike would be pretty incredible, but he is not worth the full MLE yet, more like a $4 million player. I am certain Golden State will keep him for that. Also I think he is like 6'4" or 6'5" so he does not actually fill our need of a long wing defender, someone to guard the Kobe's, Pierce's, Carmelo's, even Tayshaun Prince type guys. They would shoot right over the top.

Ime Udoka is actually just as nice when you think about it but you saw the problems he had against Kobe...he got absolutely TORCHED every time. Kobe's eyes lit up like Christmas morning when Ime was on him.

Kelenna is younger, more athletic, but Ime is way tougher and fits our team. Azu is built for Golden State. Nellie apparently loves him, he called him one of his main guys after training camp last year.

@ Blondie - not sure about Delfino, I kind of thought that was rumor/conjecture. I would be very happy if they did make an offer but I think that would be using the MLE which we are offering in full to Maggette. So I don't think there is actually an offer to Delfino yet...

@Ryno

Pietrus is supposedly off the table, not Maggette though yet, right?

Ya know what is cool about Barnes is that they even played him at Center in GS, ha!

@Blondie

Too bad Stephen Jackson turned down our contract offer all those years ago and went to the Hawks, Pacers, and now Warriors. He was very nice in the '03 playoff run. But then he would have had quite an effect on Ginobili's emergence. Although, we are still playing Manu as 6th man and Finley had the start. Damn.

I'd take Peitrus, Delfino and Barnes, younger legs would do us a favor

Supposedly Keyon Dooling is now available with Pietrus landing in Orlando. He is a nice combo guard, don't think he fits our needs, although he would be good scoring off the bench. Still better than Vaughn for Christ's sake. I think he is after $$$ though.

I'm still waiting for all the official signing news to be released because things can change, especially if Baron Davis decides to go back to the warriors instead of signing with the Clippers, that might stop Maggette from signing with the Warriors, but that has a slim chance of happening.

Here are my alternatives:

1. Matt Barnes - UFA
2. Josh Childress - RFA
3. Ryan Gomes - RFA
4. James Posey - UFA
5. JR Smith - RFA
6. Bostjan Nachbar - UFA
7. James Jones - UFA
8. Carlos Delfino - RFA

the problem with the rest of the FA, is that they are more SF then SG, that is why I liked Maggette, he is a true SG, something we need while Manu is resting during the early parts of the season

On Maggette's NBA profile he is listed as a forward.....I'm confused. :noidea:

Yeah Blondie he played SF for the Clips, Mobley was their SG. He is much like Paul Pierce, a SG in a SF body, they play either one really though. It's just a "wing" any way you look at it, the position is really about who they are D'ing up cuz ya know they are a scorer on the offensive end.

WINNER #1

ROGER MASON, JR: Not sure what the Spurs would do with him if we are gonna give George Hill a serious look. Would be a major upgrade over Jacque Vaughn b/c he can hit tons of 3's, but Vaughn did not opt out of his deal so we are stuck for another year with his hustle and that's about all. We tried to get him last year but he stayed with Washington.

. . . . . . .

Roger will be a nice scorer off the bench. He filled in great for Antonio Daniels last year, and had several games where he dropped a bunch of 3's. So finally, FINALLY we get a backup PG that can nail the long-ball (Van Exel and Stoudamire did not work out). Although, he will probably play the '2', I am guessing. I even had him on my fantasy squad for awhile! Hopefully he can D up bigger PG's like Deron Williams.

. . . . . . .

I bet they are gonna go after Delfino or Hayes now with the rest, if they don't bring back 3 of the 4 vets (Horry, Thomas, Barry, Finley). I would love it if they cut Vaughn at this point and brought back Bones instead.
