Rockets to pursue Spurs guard Barry in free agency

The Rockets began free agent recruiting period with an 11 p.m. call to Spurs guard Brent Barry, but the team could have already hit a snag in its hopes to bring back forward Carl Landry.

The Rockets called Barry as quickly as NBA rules allow in an effort to land the free agent that got away during the season when Barry was released by the Seattle SuperSonics but chose to return to the San Antonio Spurs.

Barry, 36, struggled to come back from a calf injury after he was dealt at the trade deadline, but made 49.1 percent of his shots and 46.3 percent of his 3s in the post-season. He averaged 7.1 points in 17.9 minutes, making 48.1 percent of his shots, in the regular season, in his 12th NBA season.

If he signs with the Rockets, he would follow his father, Hall of Famer Rick Barry, and brother, Jon Barry, who both finished their careers with the Rockets.

Signing Landry, the Rockets other primary free agent target might be more complicated than another chase of Barry, or even last summer’s sticky and eventually contentious negotiations when Landry was an unsigned second-round pick.

The Rockets have asked for Landry to undergo more in-depth testing of his right knee, which was injured during the season, before they would extend an offer. Landry, 24, missed seven games with what was termed a sore right knee. He averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds in 42 games, making 61.6 percent of his shots.

The Rockets signed Landry just before the start of training camp after a long, often tense negotiation over the amount of money that would be guaranteed in his rookie contract. The Rockets had planned to sign him to a three-year deal using a portion of their mid-level exception, but instead spent they remainder of their exception money to sign Steve Francis.

Landry is a restricted free agent, giving the Rockets the option to match any offer he receives, as long as the contract would work with the salary cap rules. That would limit them to their mid-level exception money. They hope to use the lower level exception, worth roughly $1.9 million, for Barry.

“We’re only making an offer if he gets a more detailed examination than imaging,” Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said.

Morey did not say that there were specific concerns, only that the team wanted as much information as possible before making an offer.

Landry’s agent, Buddy Baker, did not return messages on Monday.

The Rockets did avoid free agency with their 2006 first-round pick, Steve Novak. They exercised their option to extend Novak’s contract for a third season, worth $797,581. Novak averaged 2.7 points in 79 games in his first two seasons.

“Steve is a valuable asset to the Rockets,” Morey said.

they have been no reports on whether Barry or Vaughn have opted out of their contracts, so until an official site like ESPN or Spurs.com reports on him opting out, I'm not believing this article

Wow that was a big mistake by the Rockets to give the contract to Francis last year rather than Landry. Of course nobody knew how good Landry was then, especially the Sonics who owned his rights.

I hope Bones chooses to stay with the Spurs.

SAN ANTONIO -- Spurs guard Brent Barry opted out of his contract and became a free agent on Tuesday.

Barry was part of a February trade with Seattle that sent him, center Francisco Elson and a 2009 first-round draft pick to the SuperSonics in exchange for forward Kurt Thomas. Barry, 36, re-signed with the Spurs in March.

Barry, a career .407 3-point shooter, averaged 7.1 points in 31 games with the Spurs last season and 5.2 points during the playoffs.

Jacque Vaughn, 33, who has backed up point guard Tony Parker, exercised his option, meaning he'll be under contract with the Spurs through next season.

Free agents who were with the Spurs last season include forward Robert Horry, who will turn 38 in August and last week told a Houston television station that he wants to play a 17th season, 35-year-old guard Michael Finley and Thomas, who is also 35.

his is likely Barry's last contract so I am sure he is looking for a little bit better payday. I am fairly confident, however, he will remain with the Spurs.

This sucks I was hoping he would pick up that option. I hope we can retain him for a reasonable amount.

Rockets agree to terms with free agent guard Barry
Former Spur signed to bolster bench

Brent Barry, the free agent guard the Rockets targeted from the first minute of this month’s free agency period to bolster their bench, told the team Thursday that he would sign with the Rockets, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said.

More than four months after the Rockets pursued Barry when he became a mid-season free agent, the Rockets landed Barry following nine days considering their offer of their bi-annual salary cap exception, worth $3.9 million over two seasons.

In March, Barry chose to return to the San Antonio Spurs after he was traded by the Spurs to the SuperSonics and released, spurning offers from the Rockets and Suns. Barry last week opted out of the contract he signed with the Spurs then, and again received offers from the Rockets and Suns.

Barry, 36, made 49.1 percent of his shots and 46.3 percent of his 3s in the post-season after coming back from a calf injury that kept him out most of the second half of the season.

In the regular season, his 12th in the NBA, he averaged 7.1 points in 17.9 minutes, making 48.1 percent of his shots.

Barry’s father, Hall of Famer Rick Barry, and brother, Jon Barry, both finished their careers with the Rockets.

At 6-7, Brent Barry, part of two Spurs’ championship teams, is expected to give the Rockets size off the bench at the wing positions.

Does anybody care now that the Spurs signed Mason? This certainly doesn't seem to be getting any mention and it happened yesterday.
