J.R Smith A Possibility For Spurs?

J.R Smith A Possibility For Spurs?

J.R. Smith does not appear to be a good fit for the San Antonio Spurs on the surface, but he may be exactly what the team needs, Buck Harvey of the San Antonio Express-News is reporting.

The Spurs tried to acquire the high flying guard at the trade deadline in 2006 when Smith was with New Orleans, but the deal involving Brent Barry fell through at the last second.

Stephen Jackson previously had the same questionable character and was able to exist in the Spurs' environment, and has a championship to show for his efforts.

The thing which may stop the Spurs calling Smith may be the Denver guard's defensive tendencies, which many consider to be non-existent at best.

If he can't play defense Pop won't want him - that is numero uno!

Pop should consider him.Even without defense. We need something young and new.If Pop can handle JR like he did to S.Jackson then I'd say do it.

I can see us signing this guy before the draft, and then shipping him with the are pick for maybe a higher draft pick.
Maybe...

Doubtful what he has shown in Denver is a tendency to jack up shots and make bad decisions with the ball and there is the questions of defense

I think Pop will look at guys like Ryan Gnomes or Josh Childress

Teams cannot start talking to free agents until July 1st, they cannot sign free agents until, I believe, July 15th.

I would be okay with getting this guy as long as the Spurs didn't give him more than $3 million/ year.

If that is what you are looking for then i propose it would be practically no different to get gerald green off the waiver wire and give him a shot in camp, he is a taller younger cheaper version of the same thing -\\

Smith's outside shot is far superior to Gerald Green.

last night on ksat pop said he wanted jr.smith.....and what pop wants pop normally gets....smith would keep manu's minutes down...keeping him healthy for the PO's....and lets be honest our defense sucked all season, mostly in the PO's....we dont have the players who can defend like they used to and the rules have changed so much that we couldnt even stop one ally-oop after another....when gasol alley-oops on you....its called poor inside defense, which starts in the front court......we need points, cos the nba knows double timmy and your chances of winning are much easier....

Noone really had to "handle" Stephen Jackson. I don't think you can find one former teammate or coach that doesn't have a glowing opinion of his character. Everyone always likes to go back to the Palace Brawl, but can you really find fault in a player following his teammate into the stands to help defend him? It may have been dumb, but if I am building a team, all things being equal, I'd take the "dumb" guy willing to stand behind his teammates over the "smart" guy (see Kobe) who would not.

As for JR Smith, the appropriate analogy is definately Dennis Rodman and I don't see a problem bringing him here. As pointed out earlier, Rodman's tenure turned out to be a failure, but I think that situation more closely mirrors what is going on in Denver right now. Both teams have serious leadership issues (95 Spurs=coaching; 08 Nuggs=players), and both were desperatly trying to get over the hump in the playoffs. This current Spurs team seems much closer to the Bulls teams that Rodman joined: legendary coach and franchise players and a system that has already been proven to win multiple championships. He can come to SA and fill a specific role assigned to him.

SJAX did well in SA because he is easily influenced by others and here he rose to the level of people he played with. I do question his basketball IQ somewhat, but not his heart. I would be happy to have him back here any day.
