Q. What are the Pistons looking for?
A. Perimeter help. They obviously aren't sold on Flip Murray. Don't be surprised if he, too, gets packaged in some sort of trade. He could also be waived at little cost to the team.
They have talked to Minnesota about Marko Jaric, but I would be surprised if Joe Dumars takes on the four years and $27 million he has left on his deal. Jaric is 6-foot-7 and has played all three perimeter positions. He was even the Clippers' starting point guard for a stretch, a couple years ago.
But, to me, he is a lesser version of Carlos Delfino. Jaric is adept at making plays and scoring off the dribble, and he is dangerous in the open court. But he doesn't handle the ball as well as Delfino, he doesn't shoot it as well, and he's not as aggressive on the defensive end.
Bonzi Wells and Morris Peterson also have been discussed. The Spurs have been trying to move Brent Barry, but the Pistons don't appear to have much interest there -- mostly because it would cost them McDyess.
But look, the Pistons aren't going to rush into a bad deal. They don't have to. Lindsey Hunter is back, and Chauncey Billups is close to returning. More players, better players, usually become available closer to the Feb. 22 trade deadline
The author seems to think the Pistons don't have much interest, but you never know. I'm not sure I want McDyess since he's another aging veteran, but he would help bolster the interior.
I'd much rather have Maggette, and it looks like this trade would only go through if they can't find anyone to take Nazr off their hands...oh, I doubt the Spurs are interested reacquiring Nazr even though the Pistons would probably happily take Barry for him.
