With Seattle currently sitting on the 6th worst record in the league, they should have absolutely ZERO motivation to get better down the home stretch. Only an idiot like Bob Hill would try to win games and reduce the Sonics chances to get Greg Oden or Kevin Durant.

Forward/center Danny Fortson is not expected back until after the All-Star Break. The trade deadline is Feb. 22 and Fortson's expiring contract could be moved by then. He has not played since Jan. 5.

Fortson is on the books for 2006-2007 at $6,596,990. The Spurs could block up the expiring contracts of Eric Williams at $4,296,000 and Jacques Vaughn at $1,071,000. Or they could wait for the Sonics to buy out Fortson and sign him for the rest of the season for the pro-rated veterans minimum.

PROS: Fortson is an excellent rebounder and a tough defender. That one move might solve the Spurs toughness and rebounding issues that have plagued them much of the season. Duncan would at least know that he didn't have to grab every single important rebound with Fortson sweeping the glass. It also is a low-risk move since the Spurs can say goodbye to Fortson at the end of the season if it doesn't work out.

CONS: Fortson is a proven knucklehead with a limited offensive game. Playing next to Duncan would minimize that though. Chemistry might also be an issue since Fortson's arrival might sit one of the inconsistent twins, Elson or Oberto. Perhaps Fortson would recognize that playing for a top contender in a contract year might be the golden opportunity he needs.

I don't really like it, because I want the Spurs to focus on a shotblocker first. If they get Ely, and then can still swing this then maybe it would be OK. He'd provide some good toughness and rebounding off the bench.

The rebounding is really atrocious at the 3. It would be great for the Spurs to improve there.

If you notice, shot blocking is becoming something of a lost art. I can see why the Spurs were interested in Alonzo Mourning last offseason.

I cringe at having to go to the Dennis Rodman comparison, but with the Spurs apparently being all too willing to let Duncan get caught guarding players out on the floor and away from the basket, that leaves our other four dwarfs to keep guys like Sean Marion, Boris Diaw, Josh Howard, and Carlos Boozer off the glass. Like it was with Dennis Rodman when he came here and when we dealt him to the Bulls, you knew that he was almost single-handedly going to help you control the boards.

How many times have the Spurs played good defense out on the floor only to give up offensive rebounds? Has anybody really felt comfortable with the Spurs rebounding this season? At times on defense, it seems like Duncan has to get every key rebound, blocked shot, and guard his man and somebody elses too.

Now that Eric Williams expiring contract is gone, a trade for Fortson is out of the question. But if the Sonics buy out Fortson like I think they will, the Spurs should at least consider it.

Danny Fortson is can be a great player when he wants to play.I remember him posting 20+ rebounds a game a couple of years ago. However is he really lazy. His work ethic is really doubtful and he has become fat.

Even when he plays he is an undersized PF(6'7) so he will be just another "small" PF for the Spurs.
