Spurs made 31-48 free throws which ordinarily isn't bad, but it was a killer tonight. That's 17 lost points.......

They played well - I was nervous coming into this game because the MAVS are on such an emotional high following the last two series.

Before giving props for a sensational performance by Dallas at the line, that was absolute #$%&%$# that fifth foul that was called on Tim.

I called it, Spurs in five with a split at home, although I predicted the Spurs would lose Game 2 at home, not Game 1. Oh well, guess Dallas is dead on Wednesday.
Yeah, they said that the Mavs were only ontop for 6.7 seconds of the game.
I certainly didn't expect a win, but I am happy about it.
Even if we lose game 2, we'll come back to Dallas with a split, so that's pretty successful.
I hope that Rose is okay. I saw where Dirk stepped on his ankle after he was down hurt. He didn't move at all, which makes me think that he was out cold. Poor guy. Hope he's okay. I cant stand to see a player go down.
Malik apparently is fine, but experienced a "stinger" (which I have had) which can make your arms go numb.

He's a horse. Expect him back for Game 2.

As for Gm. 1. It was a strange game, to say the least. Bottom line, the Mavs were awesome from the line.

I hate losing game 1, but the reality is this is a long series. I do not think we will be shut out at American Airlines. I have faith we will win Game 3 or 4 or both.

Spurs have shown that they bounce back well from loses, generally speaking. I think we will come out with the rightr fire. Sustaining it is the key. We are up against it early...like the Phoenix series...but I expect a big response on Wednesday.

Going into the fourth, I thought we were going to win, but those fouls just kept piling up (both ways, actually). Dallas did not have a great shooting night from the floor, but they were able to go to one of their strengths - free throws.

Did ya'll hear during the post-game interviews that Don Nelson has a free-throw coach? He sure made his presence shown last night.
31-48 is ALWAYS bad. That is pathetic.

If the Spurs hit their normal 72%, we win. All other theatrics and bullshit coaching aside.
-Brian

Gary Boren is the Mavs full time free throw coach. He used to be an investment banker. One day while Nellie was in Oakland (Golden State), he called him up and told him he could improve his teams free throw shooting. Nelson had him come by the practice facility to show him what he had. G.S. was the worst free throw shooting team in the league that year. The next year they became one of the best in the league.

Closing games

Postby BigD on Tue May 20, 2003 12:23 pm

I'll give Dallas their props on their free throw shooting, but I think that 5th foul(bad call on Tim D) hurt the Spurs. They were already showing some signs of weariness on offense, and when Tim D went out, their offense looked disrupted and didn't know who to go to. The Spurs have been having trouble holding leads and down the stretch. I know it was only the first game(not to be too pessimistic), but Dallas showed they have many weapons and I think San An may have a tough road ahead.

It'll be a hell of a tough road. It's the WCF. I was afraid people might be taking our next opponent lightly after we beat the Lakers. This will be a tougher series. And we've already given up home-court advantage.

While I'd love nothing more than the Mavs to defend their home court in Games 3, 4, and 6, I have a feeling the Mavs are in for another seven game series. These two teams have played way too many close games over the past two years to make me think otherwise.

I just hope Dallas can reverse the Game 7 trend that they benefitted from against Portland and Sacramento.
