Does TD shoot enough?

Does TD shoot enough?

Postby Pitter5008 on Mon Jan 06, 2003 3:50 am

I was surprised to see that he was 13th in the league in Field Goals Attempted. Behind such notables as Jamal Mashburn (# , Jalen Rose (#6), Ricky Davis (#6).

You might argue that Pop's grinding offense limits total shots in Spurs games, but it seems we don't go to the big fella enough. I also think that at times, TD becomes passive.

I'm guessing Iverson and Kobe are at the top?

I didn't think anyone but TD ever shot for the Spurs. I'll bet he's the only Spur in the top 100 FGA
-----------------------
I agree with Pitter, I think TD needs to be more agressive.
Tim doesn't need 30 shots per game to dominate... he'll take his regular 9-18 to go with 7-9 from the line for 25 pts...If he wants he can take more shots and have more points...he just doesn't want it...he is not a selfish player...The Silent assasin...

Actually, SFI, you make a good point. Tim also has more FG's made than all of the guys on that list except the top three.

Not only does TD need to get more shots, but the Spurs need to generate more opportunities for him to take more shots. The fact is their style of play, the grind-it-out halfcourt style revolving around defense isn't a floorburning style. I think if the Spurs were to become a pressing, open offense, he'd get more attempts. Also, turnovers aren't helping them either. I wonder where the Spurs rank in turnovers in the NBA. Those are also lost shots.

Spurs don't need to generate more oppurtunitys for Duncan, he get's an oppurtunity every single bloody time down the court, with 4-down being run 80% of the time.
"When I grow up, I want to be a principal or a caterpillar." - Ralph Wiggum
I don't think Tim needs more shots. What I'd like to see is Tim being set up for more easy looks. I don't see why he is forced to create something out of nothing on the block all the time. Imagine his shooting percentage if he had a Jason Kidd giving him easy looks at the basket all the time.

"Shaq is getting married. I don't know about that, Drew.

Jason Kidd has had great success because he has guys who can "finish" at the rim. Guys like Jefferson, Kittles, and Martin make a big difference.

That's not to say that Duncan can't finish, but I don't see the same up-and-down game for the Spurs with Kidd as I see with the Nets.

Don't get me wrong, though, Kidd would certainly be a perfect fit for the Spurs.

He has a great knack for making his teammates better, wherever he plays.

Jason Kidd in the halfcourt is still the most effective set up man in the game... and he's never had a target like Duncan. He's had high-flyers like McDyess, Marion, Martin, Jefferson, etc... but never a big man anywhere near as dominant as TD.

"Shaq is getting married. M121...but he's only 13th in shots attempted as the MVP of 2001-02. I'm talking about how to generate more shots for him if that, indeed, is the objective. Whether he gets the shots 80% of the time is irrelevant. I think that ALL the Spurs need to get more shots off in general by reducing turnovers and getting more transition buckets.
