I LOST ALL RESPECT...

Postby DaDuncanShow on Thu May 22, 2003 1:40 am

For Dirk Nowitzski.. He's the biggest flopper in the league. I thought Vlade was bad... How can Parker jump by a 3pt attempt and knock a 7fter to the ground.. Give me a break.

Also, I think the NBA should do something about these loose Charge calls. I've seen so many defenders attempt to draw a charge rather than playing defense. Yes, I am talking about half of the Maverick defenders.

On another note, did anybody notice how Parker took it strong to Nowitzski leaning into him a la Marbury??? That was great... I guess playing against Marbury has taught our Parker a little somethin about taking it strong.

I've been noticing it more and more. It is irritating.

I really don't understand how such a physically gifted athelete can be so bad at defense. We all hear how bad it is all the time, but you never understand how bad he really is until you see him in action. It's like Watching Big Ben jack up midrange jumpers... amazingly bad. Maybe if he'd spend as much time working on his D as he does working on his flops he'd be a tad more effective.

I also think on offense when you attempt to draw a foul more than attempt to score, you ought to be slapped with an offensive foul regardless of the position of the defender. I hate players who play the refs too much...a la the Mavericks. Everyone does it to some degree, but c'mon...an entire game plan around that tactic. Play basketball...this has gotten ridiculous. The Spurs can be guilty at times also, but I've never seen players go to that tactic as much as the Mavs do. Offensive flopping.

Flopping

Postby Grapevine on Thu May 22, 2003 1:47 am

I've seen Duncan flop, too, as well as the majority of players in the NBA. And as long as NBA refs keep buying it, you're going to see more and more players flop.

BTW, Dirk's name is spelled Nowitzki.

Quote:
I've seen so many defenders attempt to draw a charge rather than playing defense.

So drawing charges isn't what you'd call playing defense? It's been a part of defense for as long as I've been following the game, which is going on 18 years, now.

Reggie is the king, but the Mavs are right on his heels.

Welcome to the board.

As for this topic...I think you know what is being referred to here. But like you said, as long as the league allows that kind of play, we're going to be seeing it more and more. Doesn't mean I have to like it.
Nowitzki is becoming a legendary flopper.

I don't recall Duncan flopping, but he does draw charges.

After that blatant no contact flop in game 1 that gave Duncan his 5th foul, I've started watching Nowtizki and he pretty much flops at every opportunity. On offense he collapses after shooting. When other players are rebounding and he doesn't have good position, he pretends he's been shoved out of the way. On defense if he's wrangling around with the player he's defending, he'll throw his arms back and make it look like he's been pushed to draw the foul; he did that with Malik and the replay shows Malik standing still while Dirk's body flies backwards. Some law of physics has been broken, or Dirk is flopping again

Yep, -irk NoDski has been doing a lot of acting so far in this series. You know it's his strategy because of the congratulatory high-fives he usually gets from Steve Nash or another teammate right after the whistle is blown. It gets annoying because they do it right in front of a Spur as they are still looking at the ref in shock. It kind of rubs it in. Also, has anyone else noticed that the Mavs bench jumps up and down and waves towels more for successful flops and fouls called on Tim than for anything their team does right? I have never seen that kind of enthusiasm for fouls. They need better priorities and goals like shooting better or playing good defense or something.
--

I don't think TD flops because he doesn't need to.. He plays stand-up defense when the refs allows him to play stand-up defense. He takes what the refs gives him. If the refs call knick knack fouls, then of course he is gonna throw his arms a little to get the calls...

By the way, I do recall a footage of Mark Cuban saying, "that is such BS".. and I think he was talking about the foul called on Parker touching Dirk and Dirk falling to the ground. Cuban had a little digusted look on his face.. hehehe.. But its cool, what you expect from a non-defensive team.. Spurs in 6 my friends!!!!

Yes, I saw the same thing and did look like Cuban was saying the call was BS--Parker knocking Nowitski down. I think Cuban is truly interested in getting games that have consistant calls in them.

I'm not sure how easy it was to notice on TV (since I was at the game) but there were a lot of Jerk Nowitzki flops that didn't receive calls. It's almost comical, Nowitzki stands in the post and then starts dancing like Mark Madsen when an opponent grabs the rebound.

But seriously, the Spurs should help Nowitzki if he wants to draw a foul. I'm sure Ferry or Willis would be happy to help out.

In addition to Nowitzki, I thought the reaction of Nellie and Del were overblown. Nellie and Del should be able to take it like a man if a hot head like Pop can endure 50 free throws the previous night. Of course the ejections could be the latest evolution of Hack Shaq, Bounce Bowen etc. He has enough coaches on the bench to slow the pace of the game by getting multiple ejections in a row.

Pop probably endured it because his own team shot just as many, they just couldn't make theirs

Game 1, even though excessive fouls were called, at least they were called on both sides of the floor

game 2, in the first half the calls were going all SA way, but it was the spurs home court so that is to be expected
i think they did start calling it evenly in the 2nd half

and by the way, this is my opinion no matter what the outcomes of game 1&2 would have been.

Pop endured it because he gets paid to coach, not sit in the lockerroom.

How can you say the calls where even when a lot of the Mavs fouls were intentional (bounce bowen)? The Spurs should have had at least 8 more free throws if the game had been called even.

Quote:
game 2, in the first half the calls were going all SA way, but it was the spurs home court so that is to be expected

It had nothing to do with home court. The Spurs were aggressive for 48 minutes and drove the ball into the paint instead of settling for jump shots.

This was Pop's best point about game 1, how can they award 50 free throws to a team that settles for jump shots?

The thing about Dirk is that flopping is his only defense. Tim flops from time to time like every other player in the NBA, but is an exceptional defender. Same thing for Manu. He's a beast defensively. Guys like Dirk and Fish that can't defend at all beyond the flop are the ones that bother me.
