If refs don't affect a game then............

Why do we even know their names.

To me a ref shouldn't even be thought about. Fans shouldn't know refs names and which games they refed but because of their insistance of putting their mark on the game it has become ridiculous.
Its sad to hear when people see Salvatore they feel the game is not gonna be called correctly. Why would a ref even get a bad name? And if he does shouldn't this be looked at? To hear someone say "he has to earn the refs respect before he'll get a call like that" or the phrase "make-up call" is LUDACRIS

Refs suck period but more times than not NBA refs are far worse than any other league.
NFL refs mess-up and safeguards are immediatly put in place to help in getting the right call..... Name one NFL ref known for repeatedly screwing teams (other than the guy whose head or body is always in the wrong place)

This is no longer an arguement for fans of the losing team(s). This topic is number one among all involved (coaches and commentators) or fan of the NBA YET Stern refuses to acknowledge it other than to have Granik say "we're aware not everyone is happy but we handle it from within"

Memo to Stern: Don't ignore this problem or fans may ignore the NBA

Its bad when the commentators poke fun at it the entire game and question each and every call because its so blatant
I.E. Game 6 vs the Lakers

These last few seasons more than any other I've heard more and more about the refs. Does anyone else notice this trend or am I just now paying attention
Yes, it's a huge problem. The ref'ing is wildly inconsistent and sometimes biased. Why should the same contact be a no-call in one game and a foul the next? Why should foul calls vary from player to player? When you look at replays, it's obvious that some refs make calls based on what they think they saw or what they expected to have seen rather than basing them on what really happened.

I think the NBA really needs to look at a plan to remedy this in the offseason. People do not want to watch a 3 hour+ game with no continuity, flow, or athletic plays. People do not want to watch a game where it's 5 against 8. If they get rid of the bias, and make refs adopt a looser officiating style (this is expected in the playoffs), then they might be able to save this league.

Edited by: VoraciousWolf at: 5/20/03 4:20:03 pm

I agree that the refs should not affect the outcome of a game, but this is why they rotate crews from game to game.
but as long as the crew on the floor is consistent on both ends of the floor then the game is called fairly.

now, if a game is called tight then it would benefit the team with more finesse and can hit more free throws
and if a game is called lose then it would benefit the more physical, bully type teams

but no matter what you think about refs, they never make you miss an open shot or free throw

The good news is that Game 2 will not be called like Game 1. Whatever kind of "good" news that may be to you.

The refs can't effect the game unless the Spurs let them effect it. The Spurs didn't play to win in the 4th quarter (again see Game 5 against the Fakers). Hopefully we can play to win in the 4th quarter of game 2 (again see Game 6 against the Fakers).

Edited by: sisyphos2 at: 5/20/03 3:52:53 pm

I'd love to see rookies get exactly the same calls as MVPs. And make-up calls suck. More good news...I will be at the game, and when I attend the Spurs do not lose. Besides, I will personally kick the crap out of the officials if they dare pull this mickey mouse bush again.
