Spurs 2003 Salary Cap

Spurs 2003 Salary Cap

Postby rilyman on Mon Jan 06, 2003 12:36 am

I'm looking for information. I want someone who knows more about the salary cap than I do to comment on this.

Next summer we will have Tim, Tony, Bruce, Malik, and Manu under contract. Everyone else has an ending contract of some kind, except maybe Bateer but he's a minimum salary anyway.

I'm making a guess that the salary cap will be $42 million and I'm going to use round numbers for salaries.

Tim - 13.5 mil
Malik - 4.5 mil
Bruce - 3.5 mil
Manu - 1.5 mil
Tony - 1 mil
________________
Total - $24 mil

There is something called an empty slot fee. For every empty slot on the roster under 12 the team has to pay a fee equal to the league minimum. Let's say $500,000. We have 5 players under contract which means we have 7 empty slots. That's an additional 3.5 mil.

24 mil
+3.5 mil
__________
Total - 27.5 mil

42 mil
-27.5 mil
____________
Total - 14.5 mil

If these numbers are correct, that means the Spurs will have a total of 14.5 mil to fill seven roster slots.

I don't know what the "max" is for a player like Jason Kidd but I'm guessing it will be around the same as Tim. That does not leave a lot of cap room to fill 6 more places.

I know you can fill the roster with minimum level players and it doesn't count against the cap, but is that what we want to do?

What kind of a center can we get for the league minimum?

What about Luis Scolia - how could we sign him?

Many people have said we would be able to sign a max player and a mid-level player - how?

???????

I maybe have less knowledge about salary than rilyman.

If spurs sign Kandi man with a max contract. How much will spurs pay him each year?
Rilyman, I'll do some research, but off the top of my head and speaking in generalities and calculating assumptions, I would assume that a top tier free agent, first of all, would want to play in San Antonio because of Tim Duncan and the franchises' annual contention for a championship. Having said that, and looking at 14.5 mil available, I would assume that the top tier FA (hence, Jason Kidd or Kandi) would be willing to defer a mil or two to help with the cap...IF that is allowable under the collective bargaining agreement. Let me check into that. I think its pretty clear that the Spurs will resign Duncan and another major free agent and fill the holes with some scrubs.

If the Spurs sign a player with less than 7 years experince then his MAX isn't the as much as someone like Kidd who has more than 7 years experince. Therefor the Spurs could sign a guy like brand for around $10 million, and get another FA such as PJ Brown for 4-5 million. If the Spurs sign Kidd there will be not much money left over for anyone decent, unless they can dump Malik's contract. The spurs could get 2 players such as a B Miller, Odom, Brown etc etc if they each only commanded around 6 mill each. Stackhouse and some more Clipper boys are still out there as well.
"When I grow up, I want to be a principal or a caterpillar." - Ralph Wiggum
There's a big ol' thread at the Spurs Dominion which may prove informative. Here's my latest post from said thread:
Quote:
Here are my revised rough salary estimates for next summer--note that I assume the team does not exercise the option on Ferry, and I assume that everyone else would be renounced if necessary:

Duncan $13,279,500 (assuming he doesn't opt out)
Rose $4,725,000
Bowen $3,733,333
Ginobili $1,500,000
Parker $856,200

SUBTOTAL $24,094,033

late-first round pick = approx. $800,000
cap hit for having under 11 players = (11-6) * 366,931 = $1,834,655

TOTAL $26,728,688

Primary sources: HoopsHype, Patricia Bender

Trading the first-rounder for a future pick or a second-rounder, or picking a foreign player who is under contract overseas, could clear another $433,000 or so off the total. Let's assume the Spurs do that.

TOTAL (5 players + min cap hit for 6 players) $26,295,619

That's not consistent with Buford's $28M statement, so I don't know if Buford misspoke/misled or if I'm missing some data.

But let's assume my figure of $26.3M is in the ballpark. If the cap goes up to (say) $42.3M, then the Spurs would have approximately $16M in cap space. That's indeed enough for a max player and a solid MCE-level ($4.5M) role player, which is the Spurs' stated goal for next summer. Even if the cap stays around $40M, the Spurs could get a young max player like Elton Brand ($10M) and a decent role player for $3.5M.

It's looking more and more like the major free-agents--Kidd, Jermaine O'Neal, Brad Miller--will stay with their respective teams. Already, the Pacers have locked up about half of their FAs with extensions. I think Kidd will at least give the Spurs a chance to make their pitch, but it's probably 70% he stays in NJ.

Nevertheless, many a Clipper will be ripe for the picking due to the team's cheap and unfriendly management/ownership. Even if the Clippers let every single one of their FAs walk, they could still field a profitable team with Dooling, Jaric, Q Richardson, Wilcox, Ely, and Wang. I think the Clippers will keep some of their FAs--but who? Brand should be their priority, and Miller should be next. However, the Clippers might not match a max offer because Jaric (at PG) and Wilcox (at PF) can step in and start for much less money. I suspect that Olowokandi will follow the money (an undeserved $10M max deal) to someplace like Miami or Denver. Ultimately, the Spurs may well be able to sign some combination of Elton Brand, Lamar Odom, and Corey Maggette.

According to Larry Coon's CBA FAQ, Kidd's max deal would start at $11,000,000 or 30% of team's salary cap, whichever is greater. Elton Brand's max deal would start at $9,000,000 or 25% of team's salary cap, whichever is greater.
Thanks, Cleve. I'll head over to the Dominion next to do some reading.

Question: Doesn't Larry Coon's FAQ say that with 7 years experience in 2003 the max is over $12 mil?

Also, if Kidd should opt for a sign and trade would that increase his value since the Nets could offer him more than the Spurs could (without a sign and trade.)

I'm trying to figure out how Tim is making more than Kidd when Kidd has been in the league longer and they're both getting max contracts.

Quote:
Question: Doesn't Larry Coon's FAQ say that with 7 years experience in 2003 the max is over $12 mil?

For the '02-'03 season, yes. That's the 30% in action. If the cap goes up, so would the value of a max deal: 25% of the cap for a player with up to 6 years of experience, and 30% of the cap for a player with 7-9 years of experience.
Quote:
Also, if Kidd should opt for a sign and trade would that increase his value since the Nets could offer him more than the Spurs could (without a sign and trade.)

Yes. The Nets could give him a greater percentage increase from year to year and a seventh year. From Larry Coon's FAQ:
Quote:
When the Larry Bird exception is used, a player can sign for a maximum of seven years with a maximum increase or decrease of 12.5% per year. For contracts signed using the Early Bird exception, it's a maximum of six years with 12.5% increases or decreases. For most other contracts, the limit is six years with a maximum 10% increase or decrease each year. A few exceptions have a shorter maximum length

However, the first year's salary would be the same whether he signs with the Nets, Spurs, Nuggets , or wherever.
Quote:
I'm trying to figure out how Tim is making more than Kidd when Kidd has been in the league longer and they're both getting max contracts.

Kidd signed his previous deal in '94, which was one or two Collective Bargaining Agreements ago (before caps on individual player contracts, hence Shaq and Garnett's monster deals) AND before Kidd had become the MVP contender of today. (In May 2000, Kidd signed an extension giving him a player option for next season.) I would be extremely happy with Odom and Brand. I agree with Cleve in that Kidd is most likely staying in NJ. I just don't see him leaving....
