Spurs v. Kings observations (late night edition)

Very nice defense down the stretch by the Spurs.

I thought Pop coached well down the stretch. He's rarely complemented when he does a good job.

Team FT = 20-23

Stephen Jax continues to make stupid mistakes, but he's also doing a lot of the little things. Loose balls. Hustle plays a la Malik(of old?). Tonight = 8 rebs, 3 asst, 2 stls and 8 for 10 from the line. Keep up the good work.

Tonight reminded us that TP is only 20 years old.

Where was Turkoglu for the Kings?

On Friday, Dec. 6th against Philadelphia (a Spurs 98-93 win) Tim Duncan went 15 for 20 from the FT line. Since that game, through the last six games Tim has ATTEMPTED 28 FT's (an average of 4.67 attempts per game).

It's unfair that they have Bobby Jax coming off the bench. In that system, he's among the top 10-12 PG's in the league (Bibby's on that list too).

Doug Christie must have trouble containing the drool before a Spurs game. They play 5 on 4 when we have the ball. He can practically ignore his man and create havoc for us all over the court. Dude is cat-quick. If we struggle with our inside game against them, we're dead meat. He is as good a defensive player as there is in the league, and he's the best at stealing the ball (3 tonight, leads league at 2.8 pg).

Both teams only went eight deep tonight (Ferry was credited with 1 min). Malik logs another DNP?

This game was played very much like a playoff game.

Joel Myers sat with Bill Schoening as color during radio play by play. It didn't work, although I wouldn't mind a good color guy. Schoening is rather dry.

It's early in the season and they struggled struggled tonight, but it's a nice win to have in the guys' minds. We can win in Arco.

Edited by: Pitter5008 at: 12/20/02 1:23:13 am

Thanks for the great recap Pitter!
Anyone care to explain what JAx did wrong tonight? How could I have forgotten the very spry Admiral who only contributed 11 boards and 4 blocks. Not to mention that sweet ally-oop from TD right out of a time out (nice job Pop!).

Edited by: Pitter5008 at: 12/20/02 1:33:01 am

I was working, but we heard the game on the radio.

Personally, I'm shocked at the win.

But maybe these two road wins will get them going.

wow, I just watched the fourth quarter.
It looked like all the momentum was Kings when Bibby hit the trey to put them up by 1.

Spurs really fought. Great game.

SJAX is a good option for Pop. S Smith may not like it but seems he's better off the bench for now. SJax quickness is key down the road. Yeah he makes mistakes, but the experience will payoff later. Just think what kind of quicks the Spurs will have with Speedy,SJax,Manu coming in off the bench! Who says Pop doesn't make adjustments? or coach. How about that TD to Drob lob? The Express News makes it sound like it was a bad shot by TD that Drob cleaned up. Looked like a typical 4 to 5 hi/low post set play the Spurs run every once in while. This season looks like as Tparker goes. so do the Spurs. Can anyone say soph jinx.
SPURSMANIA -

Well he missed a few layups and dunks, forced some 3's and made a few arrant passes. Dont get me wrong though, I love seeing him in the starting lineup and he should stay, he makes up for his mistakes with his hustle and aggressiveness. Smith seems better off the bench where he can be a solid #2 option or a #1 if TD goes out.

Well, I'm not surprised.
Bobby Jackson should really be made more of; I'm not so sure that he's not better than Bibby.

Not only was Turkoglu in absentia, but what about Divac? Crappy play from the Slavic Slayer.
Indeed, you don't see many early season games like this. When you have two squads this good who play seriously though, you get good games.
Does anyone know what Doug Christie said to Tim Duncan after Tim and Bowen knocked the ball out of his has out of bounds? It was late in the game, I think the second to last play, and Tim and Bowen were arguing with the officials that the ball went off Christie. The ref didn't buy it, and as Christie approached the ref to get the ball and was staring at Tim, he said something to Tim that looked like, "That was a foul, A**H***". Can anyone who has it taped and knows how to read lips tell what he really said?
--

Great game last night. I'm really impressed with how far Stephen Jackson has come along. I also thought Goldwire played very well. That was a nice acquisition for Pop. He plays good defense and nails the open 3. He also had a spectacular drive to the basket for a layup.

What's up with Malik? He barely plays anymore. Do you think a trade is in the works? It might make sense. The Spurs could really use another perimeter player that can create shots. They are fine inside with Tim, David, Kevin, and Mengke.

Edited by: VoraciousWolf at: 12/21/02 1:09:59 pm

OK - I want to know what the heck is going on with Malik who comes to play even when he has the flu getting all these DNP's......

I don't have a link, but there was a recent Express-News article about Pop calling Malik in for a talk and telling him he admired how he (Malik) was handling all the DNPs.

Then Malik was quoted as saying "I thought he was going to tell me I had been traded." At the time I thought Malik was joking, but maybe not.

You can't bench a player like Malik and expect him to be happy with it. I'm wondering if Malik might ask for a trade.
