Tony Parker Vs. Jason Kidd and rebuilding

Postby jomama007 on Fri May 16, 2003 6:40 pm

The Lakers series puts to rest the debate.
Of course, jason kidd is still better NOW, but Tony Parker is maturing faster than probably any other players i've seen and steps up in big games. He'll only get better too.
Kidd is awesome, but on a decline at thirty years of age.

Kidd is not worth the risk of loosing parker, ginobili, or both

with Speedy as a back up and jackson getting better, the backcourt if FINE
I agree. Though it's interesting to consider the possibilities of having two top tier point guards, it's really just overkill. Tony's young and can play heavy minutes, and I look for Speedy's on-court decision making and shooting ability to improve, making him a formidable backup. IMO, the Spurs need a big man, and I think Malone would handle the task nicely. Sure, he's not used to playing center, but he's got the build to match up with taller guys, the strength to keep them off the glass and help keep the lane clear, and he's clearly a very intelligent basketball player. Jermaine O'Neal doesn't have the height or the weight and would really just step on Tim's toes.

Rebuilding Spurs...

Elton Brand and Tim Duncan should be the new twin towers!

I know Brand is a PF too, but they're both unselfish stars who are willing to sacrifice spotlight for results.

Just think of Duncan and Brand doing what Duncan does with Rose now (high low post, help out on defense) Brand will provide more scoring rebounding and consistency and Rose will and Rose can come off the bench with energy and spark.

Duncan can be a "center"; or Brand can be the "center"; the fact is role assignments are being revolutionized with guys like Nowitzki, Garnett and Yao. It's not like the old days It doesn't matter if you call them centers or PF's. Duncan will do what he does now and Brand will help out in any capacity because he's a team player ( doesn't need spotlight)

There are two debates. What we NEED and what is available.

We have a great point guard and NO center.

Do you replace your great point guard with an awesome one and leave your center position vacant? Of course not.

The question is, is there a player on the market who is interested that can fit our need at the big man slot? J O'Neal is the only one who comes to mind.

If we can get O'Neal, and the Spurs feel he is a good fit, I do not see ANY reason to go after Kidd except as a contingency plan.

If we can't get O'Neal, then we have a problem and have to go to a new style of play. Losing the big man means we need more speed and scoring power so we go with Kidd.
-Brian
