Afraid? Why would we be afraid? I'm afraid of violence, not basketball.
-Brian

Dallas fans can wait for thier team to play in Dallas. right now it's San ANtonio's fans time who get to be there. Not Dallas fans.

just a theory answering for the Spurs......maybe with the proximity of the cities they want to insure a 100% pro-Spurs crowd. Personally, I feel that if you support a team, you should go to that teams house and their house only and it is an insult to look up and see the other teams colors in our arena. Mind you, that is a personal opinion. I would not run a business that way.

I don't think the rule was created to exclude Mavs fans, but rather keep the national scalping companies from stealing the tickets away from the fans (of the Spurs or Mavs).

Quote:
I would not run a business that way.

It's a luxury for the Spurs to able to limit their customer base. They wouldn't be doing this if the tickets for games 1 and 2 hadn't sold in 45 minutes. But they did, therefore the demand is great enough to limit the market.

Supply and demand is the bottom line in business. There were Spurs fans sleeping outside of the super barn for the next games tickets before the Spurs or Mavs fans knew that they would be playing in the WCF. Personally I think those fans deserve the tickets. It doesn't matter if they are fans of the Mavs or Spurs. SuperB, you're welcome to come down and sleep in the lines full of basketball fanatics. Some of the fans were in line before the tip off of Game 6 of the Spurs-Fakers series. It's only a five to six hour drive, which is only half the time (10+ hours) you would spend in line.
true sis but I think the Spurs were trying to prevent Marky Mark from getting a block of tickets for Mavs fans.

It seems petty to me. I'd like to hear their motivation for doing that. If it is solely to keep Mavs fans out, it's a bad move.

Quote:
Marky Mark from getting a block of tickets for Mavs fans

Like the marky mark comment, should the NBA rename the Mavs the funky bunch?

But seriously, I think Mark has enough cash to send his goons down to secure a block of tickets if he really wanted to do it. But, I've noticed a pattern where Mark prefers to whine about the status quo instead of doing something about changing it. I'm still unhappy with his xenophobic opposition to marketing in China.

I'll stand by my original comment. The Mavs fans can still purchase tickets by standing in line outside the superbarn with all the other basketball fans.

The real enemies are the scalping clearinghouses. I'm sure a lot of them are unhappy about not being able to corner the market through ticketmaster. There is no way a middle income family is going to be able to go to a playoff game if they are allowed an even greater share of the tickets (you'll see their goons waiting in line also).

Has anyone checked out the fan fiesta in the playoffs? I have, It's dead. A lot of families have not been able attend the playoffs with the existing rules. Opening up ticketmaster to the nationwide ring of scalpers would eliminate any opportunity those families would have.

And what is a sporting event without families? without kids? Take a peek at baseball if you want an example. Greed has ruined the American pastime of the 20th century. It's the difference between the last night game at Old Comisky in Chicago (because I was there) and the very last game the next afternoon. That was the night baseball died as a pastime on the south side of the windy city. The real fans had there last hurrah and turned out the lights, and the power brokers moved in the next day to 'enjoy' the ballpark before they tore it down. My old man couldn't afford the $100 ticket prices the 'legitimate' scalpers were chargning, and I'm glad he didn't. I'm glad we went to last night game instead, and I was glad to see the south siders stick it to Reinsdorf one last time by literally ripping apart parts of their seats as they left.

Check out the attendance on the south side, there aren't enough power brokers to log the two million attendance marks the real fans reached in the Eighties.

I think basketball has a great chance of becoming what baseball used to be. I believe it when I sit down in my $10 seats and see a lot of kids around me. I believe it when the 'cheap seats' have great sight lines. I believe it when I see fans around me watching the game instead of alternative venue for a bunch of fat cats business meetings.

Making the game affordable to the families is good business. Nobody in this forum would be a fan if they hadn't watched as a kid. The sparkle in the kids eye is a mirror of the sparkle we had in our eyes. It's the only reason I can't completely give up on pro baseball.

But hey that's my two cents. It's about all I have since I bought two season tickets in the cheap seats for my family to share. It's the only way I could guarantee that we could attend a playoff game.

Edited by: sisyphos2 at: 5/20/03 10:07:29 am

I heard several people on the radio yesterday that said it was the same thing in Dallas, so it does not seem that it is only SA.
If, since I posted this, the Mavs have pulled the same thing, then I can tell you that it is only in response to the Spurs limitations. The Mavs have never done that before. We can debate on right or wrong, but that is not really the point. The team has the right to sell tickets to whom they choose. Fans of any team have the right to go see their team play in any location they want so long as they are given the oportunity to purchase tickets to the events. Other teams fans can be annoying. I've been to plenty of Cowboy / Ranger /Mav / Star games to know that. I've also been on the road with my teams. I've been to games as a partial observer a couple of times with no particular allegiance to either team (Rockies vs. Cubs and Nuggets vs. JailBlazers), both home teams won. I guess I don't have a huge problem with it, but I just want to know why? Can 500 (at the most probably) Mavs fans spread out throuout the arena make a huge impact? Maybe they were doing it to protect the Mavs fans. I was just curious. I think I'll try to contact the Spurs business office to ask them.

All right, there were three different threads on this topic and multiple Mavs fans griping about this. I'm interested to see how many of them put their money where their mouth is and showed dedication equal to Spurs fans.

How many of y'all drove to the SBC Center to camp out for tickets? Did you know the line started forming before game 2 was even finished? They went on sale at 8 a.m. y'all could have arrived four hours before the box office opened. I know a lot of Spurs (who didn't complain about games 1 and 2) were there, how many Mavs fans (that did complain) made it?
