Yes we will. But some may say, “Cheer for what? The Spurs are close to being eliminated.”
Cheering does not mean we are not perplexed or disappointed with some of the results. We are perplexed because we know that this Spurs team can play better. Who else knows what this team is capable of than its own fans who have followed through thick and thin.
Yet we ask ourselves, what could have been if they had played like they are capable? At the same time we do not ignore that winning a championship is not like strolling through downtown San Antonio. Rather, it is like reaching the summit of Mount Everest. Is it impossible to reach the summit? No, because a few have already achieved that goal.
Those who have reached the top are aware that the journey is mined with numerous obstacles. The journey is so rigorous that some have perished in the process. But those who have conquered the peak have had the privilege and satisfaction of standing at the top.
The Spurs have reached the pinnacle four times and they know the path very well and the risks of failure. That is the reality of every team but only a few have triumphed and the rest has never succeeded.
The Spurs are in a precarious situation and have encountered a young, talented and anxious team eager to prove that they can reach the top. That we cannot negate and the Spurs have accepted the challenge.
Although the Spurs have already made history, they are now on the cusp of cementing that history if they win two championships in a row. This would be an achievement that no one would doubt and which very few have attained.
Can the Spurs win Thursday? Sure they can. They have already won two straight home games. Now, could they win game seven? Sure, anything is possible.
As long as San Antonio keeps playing and has an opportunity, it is possible and there is hope. That is all we can ask but to have an opportunity. After all the Spurs are experienced mountaineers and one of the few who have reached the summit.
This Thursday we will cheer and if they play in game seven we will cheer. Yes we will continue to cheer no matter what. We will cheer for the team that has given us four championships.
